Roxy The Mambo Monkey
Patrick Fell

There's a monkey named Roxy, that lives at the zoo,
She's a chimp with some talent, and attitude too.
She has tons of great outfits, some pretty cool shoes,
And an endless supply of monkey hair-dos.
Now most monkeys are happy just sitting in trees,
Eating bananas and scratching at fleas.
But Roxy's a dancer, her days are all filled,
Practicing dance steps and honing her skill.
She's quite the performer, with three shows a day,
A late show on Friday and a weekend matinee.
A Tango, a Squaredance, perhaps the Watusi,
The day of the week will determine what you see.

On Monday she Mambos under monkey filled trees,
They watch and prepare a confetti of leaves.
She makes a grand entrance, decked out in bright red,
From the shoes on her feet, to the hat on her head.
With a hand on her tummy, she cha-chas around,
While the zoo-keepers trumpet the Latin beat sound.
Hips flying, feet whirling, and an ear to ear grin,
She hits the show stopper, a slide with a spin.
Then she throws down her hat and falls to her knees,
As confetti comes down from her friends in the trees.

Tuesday's the Twist, it's the most fun to do,
And every so often her friends join in too.
They wear bell-bottom pants, with peace signs and patches,
Flowers in their hair and rose colored glasses.
Even the young monkeys join in the fun,
Shaking their booties out under the sun.
They wiggle and giggle, they stomp and they clap,
Some stop at noon when it's time for their nap.

Wednesday's the Watusi, it's as fun as it sounds.
While one arm goes up, the other goes down.
She jiggles and bobbles and jumps up and down,
Sometimes at the end she falls to the ground.
You think the show's over, as you stand up to clap,
Then she does the Watusi from flat on her back.

On Thursday she Tango's, to her own jungle beat,
She looks side to side, but not at her feet.
In a Flamenco style hat and a black satin vest,
And a shirt with red ruffles, that run down the chest.
With an arm streched out long, and her chin held up high,
A rose in her teeth, and a wink in her eye.
She carousels 'round, as if daring you in,
But it's all in good fun, from beginning to end.

Friday is freestyle, where anything goes,
What dance will she do, nobody knows.
One minute she's twirling, with her arms in the air,
Next, she's jumping on one leg and pulling her hair.
The best thing about Friday, and everyone knows,
Friday is freestyle and anything goes.

Saturdays' Square dance, like down on the farm,
To make it authentic, they built her a barn,
In a ten gallon hat and bells on her boots,
She jingles and jangles and skips, as she scoots.
There's a picnic and lemonade, horses and hay,
And frozen bananas, on hot summer days.

Sunday is always reserved for ballet,
The most beautiful dance and her most favorite day.
The zebras, the elephants, the lions and bears,
Quietly watch her "grand jete`" in mid-air.
She glides, then she jumps, and she spins round and round.
Then comes down like a feather, that floats to the ground.
She twirls like a top, on the tips of her toes,
Faster and faster and faster she goes.
Then she leaps one last time, reaching out to the clouds,
Then drifts down to the ground, and bows to the crowds.
They clap and they cheer and they smile with delight,
As she blows them all kisses and bids them good-night.

So the next time you happen to be at the zoo,
Look for the monkey that dances for you.
To learn some new dance steps, just turn the next page.
For monkeys or people, no matter their age.
