L'homme clou�

L�, o� la rue de la Reine rencontre le fleuve Saskatchewan Sud, pousse un ormeau magnifique. Je passe devant cet arbre chaque matin en allant � mon bureau, et de temps en temps, quand je ne suis pas press� je m'y arr�te quelques instants pour admirer sa forme superbe et sans doute presque centenaire.

Ce matin, on avait clou� un homme � son tronc. Il �tait l�, debout, les bras lev�s audessus de sa t�te, les mains l'une sur l'autre clou�es � l'arbre. Un seul clou l'y maintenait, un de ces gros clous � facettes dont on se sert pour assuj�tir les rails sur les madriers. Un filet de sang coulait le long de ses bras et tachait les manches de sa chemise en cercles concentriques roses allant du plus fonc� au plus p�le � mesure que le cercle s'�largissait.

Je me suis arr�t�, p�trifi�, devant lui. �tonnamment, j'�tais le seul que la sc�ne semblait int�resser. D'autres gens passaient: une petite femme toute potel�e, poussant une voiturette pour jumeaux, avec deux b�b�s roses l�-dedans. Un gros homme, accompagn� d'une femme, vint dans le sens oppos�. Lui, portait un maillot blanc � barres horizontales bleues, qui moulait son torse muscl�. Ses bras nus laissaient voir de nombreux tatouages, des dragons verts, des coeurs transper��s et une femme nue. Sa compagne, dont les chairs abondantes �chappaient l'emprise de ses v�tements, �tait aussi tatou�e, mais de fa�on moins voyante...Elle avait de jolis petits liserons rouges aux bras et un papillon rose � la naissance du sein gauche. D'autres gens, aussi pittoresques passaient de m�me, sans voir l'homme clou�. Celui-�i, cependant les regardait passer avec int�r�t.

Je lui demandais comment il se trouvait l�. Il me r�pondit que ses ennemis l'y avaient clou�.

,<<Souffrait-il?>>

<<Oui.>>

Comment le d�clouer sans lui meurtrir la chair?

J'�tais d�contenanc�, et puis j'�tais en retard pour mon travail.

Comprenant mon dilemne, l'homme m'a dit de ne pas me faire du souci. D'ailleurs, il attendait quelqu'un pour le d�clouer. Son ami ne devrait pas tarder.

Un policier est venu nous rejoindre. Il a fait le tour de l'homme et donc de l'arbre. Il a demand� � l'homme s'il s'�tait clou� l�.

<<De toute �vidence, non!>>

Il a sorti son calepin et il a pris des notes, et puis il est parti en recommendant � l'homme de ne pas quitter l'endroit. Et puis, moi aussi, je suis parti. Comme je vous disais, j'�tais d�j� en retard pour mon travail.

Je n'ai pas pu m'emp�cher de me retourner, quand m�me, apr�s quelques pas. Il avait la t�te pench�e. Une larme coulait le long de sa joue droite.




L'homme qui doutait.

D�s sa plus tendre enfance, il doutait de la v�rit� de son propre corps. Ses organes internes, �taient-ils v�ritablement comme ceux des autres ? Sa peau, que ger�ait l'ecz�ma n'�tait-elle rien de plus qu'une enveloppe d�risoire, qu'une chrysalide mensong�re d�o� il sortirait un jour, tel un papillon aux couleurs brillantes? Ses parents, �taient-ils vraiment les siens? Non! un jour, sa v�ritable famille, seigneurs �gar�s viendraient le r�clamer de son �tat mis�rable.

Il grandit, doutant de tout: des formules d'alg�bre, des phrases creuses du cat�chisme, de la r�alit� des atomes. Le latin, le grec, �taient-ils vraiment des langues qui avaient nourri des cultures mortes? Les myst�res religieux, valaient-ils mieux que leurs noms?

Il marcha dans la vie, comme dans un d�cor qui pouvait chanceler et s'�crouler � tout instant. Vers sa trenti�me ann�e il se fit un ami. C'�tait la seule chose vraie dans un tableau trompeur. Il se sentit d�livr� quand cette amiti� se r�v�la fausse. Elle avait failli �branler la charpente de son doute.

Pourtant, il n'�tait pas malheureux. Il marchait parmi la foule des hommes avec une d�marche sereine. Il voyait les gens comme � travers un verre transparent. Quelquefois, il avait piti� d'eux. Sans qu'il fr�quent�t jamais les bordels, il admirait l'honn�tet� des putains qui donnent ce qu'elles promettent. Il admirait leur d�marche lente, inexorable, comme celle des Parques. Il joua ainsi son r�le d'�tre humain sans que jamais rien ne change�t. Il aimait la musique de l'eau qui coule, les couleurs de l'automne et les soleils couchants, toutes , des choses qui passent.

� la fin de sa vie, quand la lumi�re s'assombrissait autour de ses paupi�res, il se demanda << Ai-je vraiment v�cu?>>
