Withdrawn Loners And Sparkling Drops
Colin Baker

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut a few days ago was undoubtedly a tragedy for all concerned. When murderous gunman Adam Lanza took the lives not only of innocent adults but many children too, the horrors of his crimes were instantly thrown into high relief.

For my part, two things specifically struck me about this terrible incident. First of all, the words used in my own daily newspaper to describe Adam Lanza were, I would suggest, interesting in a deeper sense. Apparently, he was a withdrawn loner. And yet this description by degrees, could legitimately be applied to anyone in capitalist America, or for that matter, any other such industrialised country. Ever since private property arose quite naturally and spontaneously in ancient times, relationships among and between people have necessarily become depersonalized. It means that for some people, the exploitation of anothers labour is the only means by which, and through which, they can secure their material means of life. Conversely, the fallen majority can only survive by largely succumbing to such domination. With the birth of private property then, humans have necessarily become means, while objects and institutions are ends.

Private property has now attained its highest form in competitive capitalist society, a society in which everything - including the given personal capacities of people - has a price. In such circumstances, individuals are necessarily cut loose and left to their own devices. Although somewhat exaggerated, this sense of individualism and depersonalisation of human relationships was perfectly captured in the words of former British Prime Minister Margret Thatcher, when in the 1980s, she argued that there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families. Capitalist America then, like any other capitalist country, is first and foremost a place of utterly depersonalized human relationships; a place in which people are deeply imbued and daily inculcated with ideas of aggressive competition, selfishness and rampant individualism. For me, and no doubt for all kinds of complicated reasons, Adam Lanza was at the extreme end of this depersonalised and individualised continuum. The philosophy of Existentialism perfectly captures this sense of profound human loneliness so undeniable throughout the industrialised world.

Second, I still derived a sense of hope from such a tragic event. Although Adam Lanza's gun rampage is barely days old, stories of undoubted heroism are already emerging. For example, according to the father of one child who survived, 26 year old teacher Victoria Soto did all she could to protect those in her care before Lanza shot her dead. Similarly, another father talked of his own daughter - special education teacher Anne Marie Murphy - and how she too, attempted to shield children from Lanza'a bullets before being murdered by him. Again, surviving teachers Carrie Usher and Kaitlin Roig both took care of their respective classes as best they could, hiding them in a library cupboard and toilet block respectively.

Heroic these teachers undoubtedly were. To suggest that they acted above and beyond the call of duty is to state the obvious. But for me, their actions represent something more than plain heroism. Human beings, somehow, have always been better than their given dominant creed. Sometimes even in capitalist societies, pity or generosity become visible and are freely extended to others, as are acts of fellowship, self-sacrifice and so on. Such human attributes are utterly alien to a society which for the most part, urges each and every one of us to fight our own corner in a survival-of-the-fittest culture. Here in the UK, these more human-like qualities are currently in abundance as thousands of unpaid volunteers give their time to help create and operate food banks for hungry people (many of whom are working!). From this perspective then, the teachers' actions symbolised heroism for sure, but more importantly a willingness, and consciously or otherwise, to pass beyond the established ways of thinking, feeling and acting under conditions of advanced capitalism. Indeed, if the teachers in question had truly thought, felt and acted like capitalists, then they would have simply left the children to their own devices.

Thus, whenever I read about, or else witness a minority of human beings who clearly think, feel and act beyond the established expectations of their dominant creed, it never fails to rekindle the hope in me, that someday a majority may do likewise. If King Pellinore were ever to ask me how best to define these few people who sometimes transcend the established norms and values of their day, I would be minded to use King Arthur's exact words - "One of what we all are, Pelli. Less than a drop in the great blue motion of the sunlit sea. But it seems that some of the drops sparkle, Pelli. Some of them do sparkle!". However, unless and until we do actually realise a form of society in which depersonalised, selfish human relationships are transformed into their opposite, namely a society in which humans are at last ends and everything else means, we can only continue to marvel at these sparkling drops, in what are otherwise, utterly selfish and depersonalised seas.
