The Adventures Of Roco Clay
E Rocco Caldwell

In Newark, the sunrise came quick, burning away the shroud of darkness from the concrete as soon as possible and casting light over the East River. It was as if the land was ashamed of being black even if it was a natural event. In Sudan the cool blackness covered the jungle and the land seemed to appreciate it like admiring the blackness of a beautiful woman's skin--a woman like Salome. She had dark beautiful eyes. Her lips were full. Her body lithe and fit formed from hard work. Her hair was long and straight like an Ethiopian and black with tints of red.
Roco Clay increased his pace. He knew the jungle well enough as he did the people he hunted. What frightened him was that the Dinka tribesmen weren't taking much care in covering their tracks. Normally they were meticulous. They wanted Roco to find them and that could only mean a trap. Roco steadied his pace remembering what Master Yokori taught him in Japan; enter a battle prepared to fight with your enemy unprepared when ever possible. He needed to be ready for anything. He pushed away drooping wet leaves and periodically stared at his compass. He tipped back the Aussie snap-brim twill hat. He figured the Dinka were headed for their village of mud and thatched conical roofs. Being alone, he took a shorter more dangerous way so that he could double back and hopefully take the Dinka tribesmen by surprise. He had only two Webly revolvers and his BRNO CZ carbine. Not a lot of firepower when going up against maybe fifteen Dinka. He couldn't be sure if all the tracks he followed were Dinka tribesmen.

The jungle was aglow in the first light of the day. The sun illuminated branches, bushes and other forms of jungle vegetation as if a volcano erupt spraying burning white magna everywhere. The Sun's radiance made the mist in the jungle appear silver. It was a thick mist that circulated across narrow passages and filled ravines and encrusted in the branches of the taller trees. The mist swathed Roco's way as he pushed on letting water from the vegetation soak his jacket and mud cake his boots. The mud and water weighted him down. He panted like a dog. He was driven by his concern for Salome. It kept him moving even while his sides prickled in pain. He knew what the Dinka would do to her if they hadn't already! He moved through wet spider webs glistening like glass in the sun light. His mind burned as did his lungs. Anger crept down his spine settling in the pit of his belly. The jungle impeded his vision beyond a few yards. He pushed against the combined weight of the jungle. The cracking of trigs signaled the jungle giving in just enough to keep him moving forward. The coarse surface of each large leaf against his face carried the potent odor of flora. It was the scent of Mother Nature. But there was another scent loitering in the jungle that caused Roco to stop. He had been moving so fast he nearly missed the smell. It carried its own richness, a healthy and robust aroma that reminded Roco of his grandfather. It was pipe tobacco and Roco knew Dinka warriors didn't smoke pipe tobacco. In the Sudan only Englishmen smoked tobacco. Englishmen like Donovan Smith. He had been a pain in Roco's side for over two years but if it was Donovan Smith Roco tracked, that pain was about to come to an end.
Donovan Smith was the name he went by and in his line of business any name worked as long as it wasn't your real name. His safari outfit sagged on his lean body and the gun belt was hatched so far in, the excess of the belt he stuffed beneath the portion wrapped around his narrow waist. He was sinister in appearance with a black patch over his left eye socket. A spear had taken that eye leaving a long red scar from widow's peak to his jaw. His beard made his face appear full and the pipe he smoked hid his face like a valve behind a wall of steam. He stared up at the sky letting the sweat from his face and neck spill down his back beneath his shirt. The sweat felt like crawling ants. The khaki boomie hat was pushed down over his thick black hair and looked like a crumbled mess. He thought the clearing would be the perfect place to ambush Roco. He checked the Ruger .375 H&H Magnum rifle then cast a sneer at the hostages. His manhood grew a little when he stared at Salome. She was beautiful and he felt ashamed that he desired her long African neck, wondrously enticing body and lengthy legs. Her face was dark with high cheek bones and perfectly oval. Each eye set the right distance apart and her nose the ideal length. He limped closer to Salome. She was on her knees with her wrists tied. Her face lifted toward the developing sky. Smith had all sorts of women of different races in his forty-seven years but none measured to the majestic beauty of the dark woman in front of him.
Smith was notorious in parts of East Africa as a poacher. He supplied the Orient with rare animals used to create medicinal drinks and ointments and the Orient in returned supplied him with opium. He was one of the largest drug suppliers in Sudan, suspected of murdering at least ten white people. The number of murdered Africans accredited to Smith held little importance to the British authorities. There were places Smith could show his face and many more he couldn't. He found safety in the bowels of the jungle and with the Dinka people. Smith operated much of his illegal businesses with the assistance of greedy Dinka chieftains. Smith gave their tribes rifles helping create one of the largest Sudanese warlords in the southern region of the country, Mutafa Tidi. But since the arrival of Roco Clay, business had taken a dramatic drop. Smith began to lose influence among many of the warlords while Mutafa gained influence. Smith's survival rested upon regaining the influence he lost. Mutafa would come after him once the warlord felt he was strong enough or Smith was weak enough. It measured pretty the same thing. Smith needed the assistance of another warlord if he hoped to remove Mutafa and that warlord wanted Roco Clay dead. Smith didn't know the warlord's reasons for wanting Roco Clay dead but it helped his cause two-fold. Roco would no longer harm his drug trade and Smith would be strong enough to eliminate Tidi.
