The Bell Tower
Judith Goff

In the bell tower she waited
Her precious love to see
The moss dripped down like tattered lace
The wind blew wild and free

The moon, the stars like crystal
Winked hard and bright above
She listened for the slightest sound
To herald her true love.

Across the sky clouds scudded
So high and wispy thin
Like grave-worn, ragged death-shrouds
The wages of her sin

She leaned against the rampart
Her hair streamed out behind
She knew deep in her heart of hearts
The love she felt was blind

As minutes turned to hours
She knew he would not be
Returning to her open arms
Her one true love to be

The wind rushed cold around her
She stepped upon the wall
Still hoping in her deepest soul
His own would hear her call.

The moon watched, cold and callous
She leapt silent from the wall
There was no one to save her
To break her lonely fall

As she lay there pale and dying
The brittle stars above
Shone down with no compassion for
One who died from want of love
