Ok - I was pretty annoyed this morning that I was asked for some change by this panhandler who would not give up. When I said no, he asked me to check my coat, or maybe go back to my car to see if there was change there! Anyway- it reminded me about this incident that took place a few years ago and why I don't give money to panhandlers. I wrote this in about 20 minutes, so it's a little rough... I'd appreciate suggestions!
Haven't written in awhile, using this to express feelings and emotions on... hold. And for spur of the moments thoughts too.
Note: Most of my writing is metaphorical!

On the streets of Detroit you will often come across
Beggars awaiting newcomers to give to their cause
Who will be sympathetic and not used to the daily nuisance
Of the panhandler’s routine of soliciting annoyance
“Hey man, can I have some change?”
Is the usual vagabond’s exchange
And I often think to myself what could he buy
Is he collecting for food, or drugs to get high?
What will he do with my quarter?
Will he contact a drug dealer and try to place an order?
What will he do with my dime?
Will he go to the liquor store and get a cheap bottle of wine?
What will he do with my nickel?
Get some cocaine to snort and make his nose tickle?
“Maybe on my way out...” is my general response
As I walk away exhibiting annoyed nonchalance
I haven’t decided if he deserves my change
Which jiggles in my pockets as I try to rearrange
My thoughts on those that rely on a stranger
To act as their bank, their personal money changer
I went to St. Andrews, Detroit’s infamous club
Where this beggar had no legs, just what looked like stubs
A sad-looking man, slumped in his wheelchair
Sneering at me, as if I was a cheap millionaire
When I came out later, I was completely amazed
The beggar was walking, his eyes were all glazed
“Hey man, can I have some change?”
He mumbled, stumbled, acting all strange
“Weren’t you in a wheelchair a few hours ago?”
“I dunno’ whatcha’ talkin’ ‘bout, yo!”
From this one interaction, I'm no longer tender of heart
When a Detroit beggar tries to impart
A plea for a quarter, a nickel, or a dime
I’m not a fool, no longer wasting my money or time
