Samarkand.... The Market I Searched For
Toluwalope Olugbenga Ogunlesi

the world is a marketplace
he said echoing a treasured proverb of his clan
i turn the words over
in my mind like a roadside
hawker turning bean
balls in hot oil
is the world really a market, maybe
information marketplace,sculpted upon
a foundation of ones and zeroes, where mortals mingle
with portals. But the real markets i've known are kuto
and tejuoso and bodija, where mother and i wade

through Smells in search
of condiments for the weekly sacrifice
to Father
where garbage and staples compete
feverishly for Mr Universe, where we walk
with hands in our pockets keeping a safe distance
from every stranger if we are not to end up
as local mints for gbomogbomos

where voices strangle the dusty air seeking
the best bargains.then i hear of Samarkand......and other markets
it must be one
of the ancient wonders of mediaeval times or a metropolis
sprawled somewhere on the moon
that Neil forgot to disclose-one small step
for him,one giant marketplace for mankind where aliens trade
souls and gold by barter,or even an oja ale
tucked in the heart of ake, where
Daodu's ghost keeps fatherly vigil.

my dreams debate
how to track samarkand, prince of elusive enclaves
first i need a visa, yet never heard of
an Embassy of Samarkand, besides no one goes to the market
without money,there'll always be
something for sale,maybe
an indulgence,or some anointing
oil on special offer from bro Jero or express
prayer beads,or one or two New Improved Idols
or even your fortune mined from the air
by a onetoothed clairvoyant.i don't think

the Messiah will be there
to flog us,Samarkand i suppose should be smart
enough not to trespass past
the wailing wall.
my puzzle is not solved yet, where is Samarkand
you ask why
should i even think
of gallivanting the world in search of Samarkand's
stalls, when he's the one who wove
i love my country i no go lie upon my tongue
even before i gained fluency.Isn't he a guest
in his own land?

i turn to my sole map,Samarkand and other markets
i have known,but oh dear..the directions
the directions lose me.he is too
complex for me building catacombs from images
and proverbs.
i think his poems should come
in Ladybird versions like the ones
where i read Puss-in-Boots and Alladin
when i was five.he loses me

amidst the letters of the Alphabet
i begin to wonder is this not the same
sacred text i chanted at two and a half.
Samarkand i surrender, let Dante and Fayed
go on with their wedding,i don't have to be there
let someone else cut the browned pages of the Ake on sale

i reach for a towel to wipe
Samarkand off my mind but all i succeed
in doing is smearing it even further.what mess is this
w.s has got me into.................

still i am a genius,conjuring brainwaves
even from disinterested atoms.......

i will ask the Tree
Yes...Samarkand Tree
