Should I Look Within
E Rocco Caldwell

Autumn pours out chilled orange juice
The scent of raspberry, ginger, spruce
Over the land of my mother
Where hillsides dwell and swagger

Always in a moment's gasp
Just where land and sunlight collapse
I can hear her whisper tease
Like a soft wind through the trees

She speaks of things incessant
Beyond the sky and sea and mist
In the corner of common sense
That knows of steel and pretense

She tells me of the lighthouse
The watcher's silver buttoned blouse
The clamor of the iron bell
To stray humanity from hell

There are the angels of our nature
That lifts us to a simple culture
And for God's sake helps us see
Only within can we truly be free
