TITLE (EDIT) If I Could Only Sing Like Dean Martin
DESCRIPTION
It was sort of a tribute to a man I envied -- as an actor. The characters he played were so dynamite and stong, and his ability with his on screen ladie....wow. It's true, his movies are the only "musicals" I'll watch. May Dean-O rest peacefully with his martini's. [207 words]
AUTHOR'S OTHER TITLES (1) The Roof That Night (Poetry) Just a bit of fantasy... [114 words]
If I Could Only Sing Like Dean Martin Bruce The Mtndewpoet
Come home in the evening
after a day of watching drunks
learn the ups and downs of their sidewalks
and settle in with a bottle of chardonnay.
Sitting at my desk--my workman's bench--
amidst left over shot glasses
from last night's single man party,
I kick off my shoes, sigh an old man's sigh,
and realize it's already midnight.
I stare at my brown face, bloodshot eyes,
and a three or four or twelve o'clock shadow,
and tell myself I'm only 22--it'll get better.
There's the same old Martin and Lewis movie on TV--
one they show too many times (not my favorite)--
but I turn it on for a few minutes to catch a song and a laugh.
Before I wrote poetry, I hated when Dean sang.
I reach over in bed and turn the set off,
and walk over to my very inexpensive stereo.
I shuffle through too many cd's and put Dean's on.
I can see why women adored him and men were jealous.
I'll sing with the best of the Rat Pack for a couple more hours,
sift through a few old hiding love letters
I never gave, and never wanted to read again,
and I'll leave the shot glasses in the drawer, up on the shelf,
and dream away the misery with a memory of "That's Amore."
