Vampyres { a love story}
A stageplay in six acts
Cast of characters:
Damien Vargas
Randolph Wiseman
Malachi Dorff
Assorted vampyres.
Author's note: Some of the special effects to
be used during the course of this play are to
be done with quick but effective lighting
changes and ''dummy''body parts.
Time:October,1987.
Place: An ancient castle in Romania.
Synopsis:
Damien Vargas, a powerful vampyre who holds a
centuries old grudge against the descendants of
the Wiseman clan, seeks revenge against them
all over the death of his wife, Jezel.
Act 1# The curtain rises to reveal a background
of dark skies littered with grey-white clouds
and a fat full moon. A coffin sits beneath the
background, surrounded by candles that cast a
dim light.
Enter: A young woman of about twenty, blond, blue
eyed, pale skinned, ghostlike. She wears a long
black gown and walks on bare feet. She approaches
the coffin slowly, almost cautiously. She speaks
in a low whisper.
Woman: Master? Master...its almost time, master.
The flock gathers in the garden below.
The coffin lid rises slowly, as a dark haired,
handsome young man with coal black eyes rises
up to a sitting position, his arms crossed upon
his chest. He glances towards the woman, and
speaks.
Damien: Come to me, my child. Kneel down before
me. {he extends his hand to her}
She kneels down beside the coffin, takes his hand.
She kisses it, but her eyes remain fixed on the
floor.
Woman: Yes, master. I love you, master. You and
only you. I would burn in the fires of purgatory
for you.
Damien: You already have, my child. But I do
appreciate the thought.
Woman: Anything for you, my master.
Damien: {glancing at the night skies through his
window} You neednt speak any words, my child.
I know what you are thinking.
Woman: Yes...master.
Damien: Do you know what I am thinking right now,
my child?
Woman: No master, I do not.
Damien: Strange.....I thought one would be able
to see my thoughts of late...my feelings ..in
my weary eyes.
Woman: What do you think of, master?
Damien: I was thinking of....my Jezel...I dreamed
of her last night...oh..how I still long for
her....
He climbs out of the coffin, walks to the window,
gazes up at the moon. The woman follows then
kneels down beside him again.
Damien: Stand up, my child. Stand with me and
gaze upon our world.
{she does}
Damien: I feel so weary tonight...The coldness in
my bed at daylight, the ancient feeling in my
bones as I rise at dusk.
Woman: But you are so young, master.
Damien: Ah..yes...so old in years, but still
forever young. It is not my outward appearance,
child, that makes me feel ancient. It is the old
longing in my heart. My Jezel has been gone...
what? three centuries now? It could have been
millineums. Ive lost track of time without her
by my side.
Woman: You must have loved her deeply.
Damien: Yes....deeply. As deep as the sea...
Woman: Then she is still with you, in your heart,
your dreams....
Damien: In spirit, yes. In flesh and blood, no.
I long for her soft touch again.
Woman: You feel...cursed, dont you master?
Damien: I am cursed, my child. Cursed with
immortality, the curse of neverending life,
without my Jezel, without even death for comfort.
Yes...I am cursed.
Woman: Im sorry you hurt so, master.
Damien: Im used to it, child. {he smiles}
Woman: The flock gathers below, master.
Damien: Good...tonight, I will once again fill
my blood oath, to shed every drop of blood, to
take every human soul, from the descendants
of jezel's assassin.
Woman: The flock below awaits your word, master,
which they will obey.
Damien: Tonight, it will be a harvest of NEW
souls, of flesh and blood, of tears and pain
to fill up my dark and lonely prison.
Woman: Yes, master...flesh and blood....
Damien: I will spill their blood, as they did my
Jezel's. I will tear their weak and spineless
bodies apart with my bare hands and teeth. I will
spill their blood and bleed them out, then toss
the pieces of their rotting carcasses into my
homefires to burn. The murderers of my Jezel
will all DIE!!
Woman: Yes master...all DIE!
Damien: Go now, my child. Ready the flock for
our flight. Ill join you momentarily.
Woman: Yes master.
{she exits}
Damien walks over to a far wall now, where a
large painting of Jezel graces the wall. He looks
up at he painting, his hands crossed over his chest,
over his heart.
Damien: I will take my revenge tonight, my love.
For you, and for me. And I promise you that
someday, we will hold each other again for all
enternity.
He kneels down in front of the painting with his
face in his hands as if to sob.
Lights begin to fade, curtain falls.
End act 1#
