Author's note:
I havent ever tried writing a ''splatterpunk''
story before, so dont be too critical.

Billy Ray caught up to the little skinny guy
just as he was getting ready to haul ass over the
top of a barbwire fence.
Just as Billy reached out and grabbed the guy by
the hair, the guy slipped and landed crotch first
on the barbwire, the little sharp wire tips piercing
his balls.
The little guy screamed like a wounded banshee,
making a high pitched, screeching sound like an MX
missle coming in for a direct hit.
Billy Ray yanked him back off of the fence hard;
leaving a small, bloody strip of skin and a piece
of frayed denim behind.
Before the little shit even knew what hit him,
Billy Ray had the guy's head clamped between his
legs face up, and was jamming the tip of a boning
knife into the guy's right eye socket, popping
the eyeball out with a quick flick of the wrist.

It came out looking like a bloody hard boiled
egg, and Billy snatched it up fast between two
fingers and popped it in his mouth, smiling and
chewing at the same time.
Small bloody streams of some kind of eyeball gunk
were dripping from the corners of his mouth, as he swallowed and said,
''Yuummmm-yum!!''
Sylvia, the Asian chick who had been following us
around like a lost puppy the last few days, just
stood up on a big tree stump, cranking up some
rap-metal shit on her jambox full blast and dancing,
laughing like a hyena. It think the song playing
was that old one by Ice-T., the one about killing
cops or some shit.

We had found her inside an old gutted record
shop a few weeks ago, huddled down in the bathroom,
gnawing on a dead rat. Had told us she was hungry,
needed some protein is all.
The skinny little one eyed geek had passed out now,
most likely from fright more than pain, and was
just laying there in the dirt and barely breathing.
I noticed he had pissed his pants.
I said to Billy; ''Man, he was a fast little
sucker, wasnt he?!''
''Damn straight,'' Billy said, wiping his chin
with his shirt sleeve. ''Damn near got away from
me, and i was wearing my pro-Keds!''
Sylvia was standing next to us now, looking down
at the little one eyed dude and shaking her head
in disgust. ''Shit,'' she said, lighting a hand
rolled ciggarette, ''He aint even got any meat
on his bones, except for on his ass. I guess we'll
be eating rump roast again tonight.''
''Quit your bitchin,'' Billy said. ''Its better
than rat, aint it?''
She coudlnt argue with that.

That night, after we had chowed down, we were
sitting by the campfire in Central Park, talking
about where to go hunting the next day.
''I hear the subways are a good spot,'' Sylvia
said, nibbling on a fingerbone. Syl liked them
fingerbones; said they reminded her of small pork
ribs if you cooked them long enough, used some
barbecue sauce.
''Are you nuts?'' I said, chasing down the last bite of
skinny's ass with a big gulp of lukewarm beer.
''The subways are full of the crazies.''
Billy broke in. ''Yeah, but I hear that theyre so
weak from the fever they cant do jackshit. Just
wander around like fuckin' zombies and drool all
over themselves.''
''Theyre still crazy,'' I repeated. ''Which means
theyre still dangerous.''
Syl started to say something, but didnt. Just
sat there gnawing on a fingerbone and listening
to Anthrax on the boombox. She loved that death
metal shit. I myself, I was more into smoking
some skunkweed and kicking back to Pink Floyd.

Thats the way it had been since they had
dropped the bomb; our daily schedule of waking up,
wandering around a dead city full of zombies and
corpses, the lucky ones who'd died on impact.
Looking for food, most of which had already been looted or
had gone bad because of the fallout dust. That
dust, man, it ate you up, made you look like one
of those creepazoid zombies from Dawn Of The Dead.
A huge grey cloud of the nasty shit still hung
over the city to this day, like a big grey ghost
just waiting to come down and engulf us inside a
shroud of death.
Too late; i knew I didnt have much soul left, had
already started feeling one of the walking dead.

We hadnt started trying out humans for chow
until around the second month; me and Billy had
been out scavenging around inside an old 7-11,
when we found this dude that had been burnt up,
cooked to a crackly crisp. Probably one of the
crazies had done it for fun.
For some reason, Ill never know why, Billy Ray
pulls out his boning knife he carried for protection,
bends down, and proceeded to slice a strip of
cooked skin from the dead guy's thigh. At first,
I had thought he was going for his dick and balls,
and I was getting ready to blow pies.
I had just stood there with my mouth hanging open
like a retard, as Billy stuck the skin into his
mouth, bit off a chunk. The guy had still had some
blood left in him, it was running down Billy's
chin.
After a few seconds of chewing, Billy had swallowed
and said, ''Hey...not bad, man.''
Then I tried some.
I hate to admit it, but it wasnt that bad. Cooked,
that is.

Ever since then, we've been going hunting
about everyday. Its not like we're sick fucks
or anything, we're just trying to survive, you
know?
But, theres one drawback. The folks we chow down
on are infected with the fever too, so we'll
still die from it, and probably even faster now.
But, they say lifes a bitch and then you die,
you know?
A mans gotta eat.
Good blood, good meat, by fuckin God, lets eat!
as Billy ray always says.
Damn straight.
The next day we woke up early, drank a couple
of warm beers, smoked some skunkweed, then hit
some of the alleys uptown.
There were still a few winos hanging around, and
more often than not they were too drunk to put
up a fight. We'd just walk up on them,
bash their heads in or slit their throat, then
drag their carcass back to our camp under the
Verrezanno bridge.

As we walked down the alley, Syl suddenly
turned real blue in the face like a drowning
victim, started choking, gagging.
She fell to her knees, both kneecaps cracking as
she hit the concrete, and some nasty, foul
smelling bodily fluid began dripping from the
corners of her mouth, which was frozen in a rictus
of pain and fear.
She knew.
The fever.
Then she looked up at us, her eyes pleading, but
not for help, but for a quicker death.
Then, she fell over face first and layed there
for a few seconds, her thin body convulsing,
spasming.
Then she just died.
''Dont look like we have to go huntin today after
all, huh?'' Billy said. I nodded in agreement.

That afternoon, after we had her all stripped
down and cleaned up, we had put the cut up meat
into an old icebox we ran on a gas generator.
Suddenly, as Billy swallowed a mouthful of titty
meat, he loved them nipples, he starts turning
blue and shit and choking anf gagging and blowin
pies the size of plates.
He just looked over at me with those bloodshot
peepers of his and said, ''Put one...right...here.''
and pointed at his forehead.
I knew what he wanted me to do.
With tears in my eyes, I walked over to him, pulled
out my trusty old .38 snubby, and put a slug right
where he wanted it, watching what was left of his
fever rotted brains exit the back of his skull.
I was gonna bury him, but I knew deep down thats
not what he would have wanted.

That night, as I sat by the campfire alone now,
friendless in an already unfriendly world, I couldnt
help but to think back on all of the good times
the three of us had had together.
I raised my beer can in a mock toast to my fallen
comrades, took a big gulp, then sat down to a
meal of barbecued ribs.

As I chowed down, I thought; I never knew an old
friend could taste so good.

DISCLAIMER: STORYMANIA DOES NOT PROVIDE AND IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR REVIEWS. ALL REVIEWS ARE PROVIDED BY NON-ASSOCIATED VISITORS, REGARDLESS OF THE WAY THEY CALL THEMSELVES.

"Very good writing, characters believable, but the situation was a bit puzzling. I was fine with them driven to eating human meat, but only in the absence of animals and anything that would kill them would presumedly do the same to people. It would work better on a spaceship or some isolated place, or with some explanation like they just left a shelter to find a world devoid of life." -- Iam.
