"One the way to Cape May, I fell in love with you." For nine months out of the year I reside in a residential town in New Jersey. For the past seven years three months out of the year my summer retreat is in Cape May, New Jersey. My warm summers in Cape May have been packed with enjoyment, amusement, sun, and first-class friends. The people that I have met over the years have developed into valuable friends. The magnificent times that I have experienced will stay with me evermore.
Over the years we have had our share of decrepit apartments. The outrageous prices of the renting options have forced us to reside in some one-of-a-kind dwellings. The single room efficiency that four of us shared did have some serious character though. Our tiny room looked as if a tornado had hit it and dropped hundreds of pairs of flip flops, thousands of shirts, and a pile of pants. With absolutely no storage area, our bathroom and kitchen floors were apparently transformed into a closet. There was no way to cross our 10" by 10" apartment without tripping over some sort of a hair utensil. The best was when friends decided they would come and stay the night. "Of course, you know you are always welcomed", we would say. The next thing you know, we were packed like sardines in a queen size bed.
There is something about the small town at the tip of New Jersey, I do not know what it is but something has captured me. I feel like a prisoner who just can't escape this quaint Victorian village. I can picture it all right now, so clear. On foot going a snail's pace down the streets admiring the precious gifts in the windows of the tiny boutiques. I could sit by the beach all day long with the salty windy breeze rushing through me like a swarm of bees. On my short walk to work I would savor the succulent aromas of the award winning restaurants preparing dinner for the evening.
I am so fortunate to have been able to spend so many unforgettable summers down the shore with my friends. I sometimes think about what it will be like not to vacation here on my fantasy island. It depresses me the way rain does on a yucky day in April. My friends and I are maturing faster and faster these days and we are beginning to realize that Cape May can't be our summer destination forever. All of our friends are beginning to get "real jobs". Real jobs? I have those two words more than I hate people who litter and pollute our oceans. There is constant discussion about careers and moving away, it makes me miserable.
Next May I will again return to my house at the beach and catch up with all of my summer friends. I know I will have another unforgettable summer but I will treasure it more so than any other past summer months. After this year, we will not be in school. We will be working and starting our lives out in the real world. Reality will slowly set in and we will realize our time in Cape May will never be the same again. So I guess what they say is true; so accurate that it hurts me severely. All good things must come to an end. I know something that will never end and that is all of the bonds that I have formed with so many wonderful people. The memories, stories, smiling faces, and jokes will always exist inside of me forever.
