Abilene And Beyond
E Rocco Caldwell

Coltrane climbed the outside of the boarding house keeping the cover of two trees to his right. The music from the saloon filtered down Front Street reaching the boarding house and except for the music the street was quiet and empty. Abilene had grown to be one of the largest cow towns in Kansas mainly due to the Chisholm Trail ending in Abilene. Coltrane could smell the shit of the longhorns stocked at Joseph G. McCoy's stockyards close to the railroad station on the opposite end of town. But to the inhabitants of Abilene what he smelt was the scent of fresh greenbacks. Like most cow towns the gambling halls sprung up as did general stores, saloons, and whorehouses like weeds. Hell the talk was that Abilene had the prettiest girls in the west.
Pete Jones stomped dead an Osage woman after she refused him sexual favors in Newton another cow town not far from Abilene nearly one year ago. The news of the vicious attack reached Coltrane living among the Shawnee only a few weeks ago. The Osage Indian woman was the daughter of one of Coltrane's gang. The sheriff of Newton only forced Jones to leave and not return even though many of the residents swore it was plain murder. Jones's defense was that the woman was a dirty Indian and needed killing. Anti-Indian sentiments were on the rise as the Nez Perce clashed with the army in Montana and Gall's band harassed homesteaders in North Kansas. The memory of Custer and the 7th at the Little Bighorn was only a year old. So the only good Indian was a dead one! Coltrane discovered from the sheriff of Newton just before Coltrane blew his head into blood chunks and pieces of skull that Jones headed to Abilene. It had started again, the killing or maybe it just never stopped. Vengeance was a destructive entity. Coltrane knew better than anyone what vengeance did to an individual. Pete Jones tracked him for almost a year because Coltrane killed his only son but Coltrane slipped into Texas and Jones eventually gave up. The story was did Coltrane was gunned down by a handful of Texas Rangers near the Rio Grande.
Coltrane opened the duster and retrieved the Schofield stuffed in the small hip holster as he slipped on the balcony. The street below was lit by the streetlamps and every shop shut up tight. Two French doors with curtains opened after Coltrane used his knife and popped the bolt that held them closed. The scent of woman perfume choked Coltrane. All that scent was hiding something foul he thought as he stepped inside the house. The lighting was dim inside the corridor making the color in of the carpet difficult to distinguish but it was some sort of red. The place was decorated like the fine whorehouses in New Orleans. That made Coltrane smile he had fond memories of the whores in New Orleans. He spent a few hundred Yankee dollars in New Orleans trying to forget Lace. He needed something from Jones before he killed him, the whereabouts of Black-Heart Robinson. It was simple military tactics remove the only man capable of tracking him and his gang down once all hell broke loose. Colonel James "Black-Heart" Robinson fought Quantrill's Raiders and Confederates during the war and until his recent retirement was one of Philip Sheridan's top commanders during the Indian War. He was more than capable of tracking Coltrane down and he would be motivated after Coltrane killed his son too.
Coltrane calmly lit one of the curtains that hung over the stairway and crept back into the shadows to wait. It didn't take long for the alarm of fire to echo through the boarding house and doors to fly open following by running naked bodies. Pete Jones was a tall man in his mid-forties with an unkempt black beard. He also had a wooden leg he lost in the war. That man came out of the room closest Coltrane after pushing the small whore back into the room to save himself. Coltrane struck Jones hard on the back of the head with the Schofield dropping the man like a sack of rocks.
"What are you doing?" Jones cried. Coltrane jammed the barrel of the Schofield into the man's mouth.
"Where is Colonel Robinson hiding these days?" Coltrane's thumb cocked the hammer of the pistol back as his face darkened.
"Who are you?" Jones managed to force the words around the barrel.
"Where is Robinson?" Coltrane's eyes were sinister and his face dark speaking of his lack of respect for human life. Jones knew he was about to pull the trigger.
"Just outside Osage City near Lyndon he has a ranch there!" Coltrane removed the barrel from the man's mouth and straightened himself. Relief ran across Jones's face.
"Do you remember Run like a deer?" Coltrane asked.
"What?"
"Not what but who, she was the Indian woman you stomped to death with your new boots back in Newton." Jones left his colt in the room still in its holster hanging off the post of the bed. He could see it from where he lay. "I want you to know that the man who killed you is Bob Coltrane!"
Son-of-a-bitch was all Jones could say before two bullets broke his skull into pieces.
Coltrane didn't realize that the woman Jones pushed back into the room saw and heard everything and promptly informed the authorities that Bob Coltrane killed Pete Jones and asked the whereabouts of the state's most beloved Colonel James Robinson the butcher of Colville Missouri.
