A Young Otters Dream
Mungo Faust

With a clever flick of his tail and an almost spasmodic twisting of his spine, the young otter deftly manoeuvred around the sharp rocks of the fast flowing river. Impressed by his own ability, an art he told himself, he mentally gave himself a round of applause as he climbed the bank.

Making for the tall rock that overhung the deepest part of the river, he imagined an audience of thousands, (no millions) waiting with baited breath for him to complete his latest death defying stunt. There was silence, in his mind at least, as he climbed to the top of the rock and contemplated the dive.

He paused, teasing and playing with his audience to gain maximum effect. He could see them all, their wide eyes betraying their fear for the safety of their hero. Some could barely bring themselves to watch.

With all the pizzazz of a true showman with perfect timing, he judged the moment perfectly, launching himself with apparent carefree abandon into the water below. A triple somersault and a perfect entry into the water with barely a ripple. The crowd were beside themselves with awe, and waited eagerly for him to reappear from the water. It did not happen. They waited - and waited. The seconds seemed like hours and when they least expected, he emerged suddenly, a fish held between his teeth.

Seven of the audience had fainted, unable to stand the stress whilst the rest cheered and clapped and whistled for all they were worth. He was one very happy little otter.

Youll be the death of me one day.

Startled, he turned around sharply to the sound of his mothers voice. His audience vanishing quickly as he was abruptly brought back to earth.

How many times have I warned you about diving off that rock. Any more and you will be grounded.

But I caught you a fish. You like fish dont you? I did it for you.

His mother said nothing, he knew that he was in the most trouble when she was silent.

Im sorry. his face looking more sad than he really was But one day I am going to be a big star, in a circus or something and everybody is going to love me as much as you do and youre going to be in the audience sometimes and youre going to be so proud of me arent you?

The glint in his eye warmed his mothers heart and her love for him softened her anger.

Well, for someone who is going to be such a star, I think we are going to have to think up a stupendous stage name, then I can say to the people thats my little boys name up there in lights, but his real name is Ray - and I thought his stage name up.

Ray felt a little confused. He liked his own name, and couldnt understand why he had to have a stage name.

All the big stars have a stage name, his mother explained I heard once that Lassies real name was Norman.

I dont care. Ray was adamant. I am using my own name, so there!

Please yourself! said his mother but how far do you think you are going to get with a name like Ray Lee Otter?
