Punk Club Saturdays -- A Memoir
Hayley Burdett

It was the summer of innocence. The season, scorching with heat, before we would leap from junior high school to high school. We were barely teenagers, divine in our adolescence, spending afternoons writing to our favorite music groups and planning trips to the local coffeehouse.

"There's this place we should go," she said. "They have coffee and local music."

We nodded our heads in agreement. Something different from piling into the car to head to the mall. This time, we headed into instead of out of town to a place called Fennario's. Smoke seemed to be billowing out from the front door. It was a sanctuary for young hippies and punks in town.

When we stepped over the threshold, our days as eighth graders left our hearts. We were adults, breathing in the carcinogenic air. We made a pact that day, our sweaty palms touching -- no drugs, sex, or pop music. This was our haven in our straight edge summer. The music became our punk rock lullabyes.

That summer defined us as a whole, a group of three young girls in a town of drunk college guys, Mary Tyler Moore mothers, and soccer playing baby faces. We were different, sinking deeper into the local music scene.

Rebecca* was cold and untrusting of the world. She knew it was a virulent place. Her hair was dyed varying shades of chromatic hues.

Mattie* was quiet anfd enjoyed the music with a silent bob of her head and a solemn smile.

And me - what can I say about myself during this time? I squirmed during tests, fidgeted with the curly ends of my hair, and watched the clock with enthusiasm in Pre-Algebra class. My heart was infused into the literature my eyes would greedily gobble up.

Sweeping by as fast as the coming autumn wind, our summer ended. High school started, calling us to walk down different roads. A friendship waned, until only a fraying sliver remained of what had once been a glistening and glorious whole. no more saturdays spent wasting our childhood breathing in second hand cancer from the tobacco the shop sold.

Now we are gone, cold and distant from the summer land that used to be. Rebecca fell into the darkest pits of the drugs and sex we had pacted to stay away from. Mattie took charge to turn the enviornment back to what it should be. I am here, writing the explanation of whatever happened the pulsing punk heartbeats of our summer Saturday evenings. It has not flat lined. We are still here. Extremely anemic and cold, but the heart still faintly pounds within the chest of an ancient thing.
