A hunter stood on top of a small hill, looking down at a group of children playing in a scorched field below. Slightly to the left of them were a bunch of pristine huts, which housed the tribe-members. He bowed his head, and said a prayer to the Fathers the powerful beings who created the world and his tribe.
Despite his best efforts, however, he couldnt help traveling backwards in time in his memory, to the moment when another hunter had stood on a hill just like the one Samson stood on now, and watched his daughter Vera play with the other children. Something began lumping in Samsons throat, but as the wind passed through his long golden hair he pushed it down before it could manifest itself. He had to be strong.
Still, some images of her seeped through. Lion, he remembered her soft voice calling him, as her little hands played with his mane-like hair, and her blonde-haired, blue-eyed smile shone onto him. She had been gone for two years now, and he missed her, even though he knew it was wrong. She was with the Fathers now, happy and waiting for him to join here when his time came. He often wondered what if what if she didnt go to play that day, or what if he had a chance to save her but trying to save her was, of course, nonsense, a violation of the Fathers law, which would have forever doomed him into an after-world away from her. So he stood and watched, indifferent, as the other hunter carried his daughters body away.
Finally, he was ready. He drew the knife he had kept on his belt, and kissed the blade. Then, he started towards Metta. Let it be quick and painless, he asked the Fathers, for there was nothing glorious about a messy kill. Even worse, a messy kill could raise suspicions of hesitation, and of questioning the will of the Fathers.
The child didnt oblige. That was the problem with children they were too small to understand. Vera had tried to escape from the other hunter too. Of course, it wouldve been much more practical to hunt an adult, but Samson couldnt go against the Fathers. And his heart told him that the Fathers had chosen Metta.
Before she could slip out of his sight, Samson began the chase. Metta was no match for his developed, athletic body, so he had little trouble closing the gap, driving her into a corner surrounded by high rocks. Thanking the Fathers he lifted his knife and fell to the ground unconscious.
