I walk over to the newborn dragon chick, it hiccups and sends out a spark. It's been three long years. And I was here to witness the dragon chick hatch. I try to identify it. It must be a European dragon. I reach out my arm to hold it, and it playfully nips at my arm. Mischievous thing! "Are you hungry little fella? I'll get you some food." I say to the dragon. I walk over to the kitchen where I was preparing the meat for the dragon. While I continue to slice it up, the dragon entertains itself by searching for jewels and MY precious objects. I don't really mind. It hops out of the fire place and take its first wobbly steps on all fours. As it prods the fire-proof carpet, I notice it spots one of my emeralds. It stretches its tiny wings, heightens its posture and attempts to get it. It jumps up, flaps its wing for two seconds, then falls. It keeps trying. How interesting. That dragon won't stop until it gets that jewel. That is one determined dragon. I finish cutting up the meat, put it in a (fire-proof) bowl, and place it on the ground. The dragon chick ignores me and keeps on trying. "Hey little fella! Stop trying to get it or you'll hurt yourself." I reach up and grasp the emerald. The dragon chick's eyes never leave the emerald. I give it the emerald, but it doesn't seem as satisfied. It looks around and spots the food. It races over and woofs into it. Must be exhausted from trying to get that emerald. When its finished its dinner, I hear its first word... "Yum". Perhaps I should give it a name. But is it a girl or a boy? Let me see... The arrow on the end of its tail tells me. It's large, so it must be a female. I know...Caridion. Caridi for short. Miraculously, Caridi says her second wordCaridion I walk over to the kitchen and get a cup of hot water, but accidentally burn myself. I curse. Just when I was in my worst state, Caridi learned her third word. Oh no. She is going to repeat that. Over and over. Even in front of my guests. Im going to have to punish her every time she says it. Caridi curses. I get some ice and melt it a little. Then I pour it over her. Naughty Caridi! I say. Caridi curses and curses over and over again. She finally learns that swearing and cursing is bad. After a couple of months, she is speaking in sentences and now knows my name. How come you said that nasty word, Melissa? (Melissa is my name) Caridi, I control when I use it. When guests are here I dont use it. But you wouldve. Caridi has a little pile of my precious stuff near where she sleeps. (Which is the fireplace) How about we try telepathy, Caridi? Telepathy is where you speak with your mind, and the person you are talking to can hear you. Ready? Im going to say hi and you say hi back to me. Hi Caridi. Hi Melissa. Hey, it worked! Use telepathy to tell me where you are if youre lost and Ill come find you. What do you mean Melissa? I mean, you get to explore the big wide world. You can fly, you are more responsible, and maybe youll catch a bird! So, if youre in trouble or if youre lost, just tell me where you are or what is attacking you. But when youre grown up, I cant help you anymore. So just be careful, dont get in trouble and have fun. I scoop up Caridi and nuzzle her. Then I put her on my windowsill. Once again, Caridi stretches her wings, heightens her posture and this time lifts gracefully up into the air and flies off into the unknown. Come back before sundown! I yell as Caridi disappears into the horizon.
