No Angels Or Devils
Michael Potter

My wife and I and the Thomas's, Nick and Kelley, were driving along the coast road in his convertible. We were enjoying the ride, it was day light and the weather was fine. The radio was on and the music ended and they were going to play a radio show called No Devils, No Angels. Nick was going to change the radio channel but I had heard this story before and said, "Leave it on, this is really good." We were a captured audience, we had a lot of time and the story began...
The narrator began the story. "Once my world was a fine place but..." There were three women and four men on an isolated plat of land in a building, conducting a psychic experiment. They were all dedicated and they knew each other well. They were going to test the limits of psychic ability, it was to be for the good of human kind.
They would prove people were good by bringing angels to help them. They concentrated day after day to open a door into heaven to let the angles onto earth. They decided that they would create their illusion by believing it was real and because they believed, it would become real. An outsider would say that their belief was like that of a fanatic.
The tension between them grew and grew. They were becoming psychic with each other, they could sense little things about each other. One day the sky began to storm in one small area and then the storm grew fiercer. Maybe this should have been a warning but they persevered in their psychic endevors until in a flash of lighting and ear splitting thunder, the sky split open. What they did not count on was their own intensity.
Angles did come forth but they were serious, sin destroying angles and since none were without sin, they began to destroy everyone. All the destruction radiated from this power center these people had created but the three women and four men were safe because they had created the rules of this situation. They became even more psychic with each other and they became powerful. The angles also became more powerful and even more avenging.
The group of psychics became more aware and discovered that one of the women was not with them, she was having second thoughts. She wanted to stop the experiment and began to make plans on how to do this. But the others heard her thoughts and when she stepped out of the shower they psychically and telepathically commanded the towels and her clothes to strangle and bind her until she died. Total power corrupts totally.
The angles, encouraged by this behavior, became more avenging, they were as devils, demonic. Everything was falling apart. People could not keep a coherent thought. The whole psychic structure of earth was deteriorating rapidly. People were going crazy becoming lawless and aggressive. Eventually even the core people at the center of the group became crazy and enraged. They admitted defeat and were agonized over what they had done. They shot each other one by one and the last one shot himself.
The narrator said his world was destroyed and he could no longer cope and shot himself and the show was over.
We parked the car and walked on the beach. The ocean crashed against the reef. Nick was holding his head, we had all been absorbed by the story. "It's over," Nick said. "Because those people never existed they never could bring angels into existance. I can't believe in fairy tales anymore. There are no devils and there are no angles, there is only what you believe."
But I believed that I was observing the story of my life and that they were all keeping an eye on me.
