Good News Is No News
Colin Baker

In Thursday's i newspaper (13/12/2012), the headline was big and bold - 'Biggest Fall In Jobless For A Decade'. Politicians especially, couldn't wait to shout the news from the rooftops. Unemployment fell by 82,000 in the three months to October 2012. This represented the biggest quarterly fall since 2001. Employment minister Mark Hoban claimed that the figures were "…a credit to British Businesses".

Leaving aside the thoughts of those economic and business analysts who believe that such a fall in unemployment could be negated sooner rather than later, it does indeed seem like good news, not least for the lucky 82,000. Lest we forget, according to the government's own figures, more than 2.5 million people are still officially unemployed. Thus, at least these lucky few now have a regular wage packet or salary once more, and with it no doubt, a greater sense of self-worth.

But what of the reality underlying such good news? After all, in any scientific endeavour, appearance is always necessarily correlated with reality, for otherwise, superficial conclusions are the best we can hope to obtain. In this sense, those who are rejoicing are, in my view, merely extolling the virtues of exploitation and self-alienation.

For a start off, a bulk of these newly employed 82,000 people will work in the private, rather than the public sector. Thus, they will necessarily be exploited by their respective employers in pursuit of surplus value, or profit in its money form. The source of surplus value in any capitalist polity is human labour power. A business buys someone's labour for an agreed price. Then, during the working day, the employee subsequently produces more value for the business than he or she is paid by way of remuneration. Whether someone works in the productive sector creating actual, tangible commodities or in the service sector, exploitation of labour power is still common to both.

Moreover, like all other employees, these 82,000 new recruits will necessarily suffer self-alienation. They will be used as means to an end. Thus, they will be put to work and used as impersonal things by their respective employers. Each working day, their individual, personal capacities will become the property of their new employers to do with as the latter see fit in their pursuit of profit. This experience of self-alienation may vary by degree but there is no way of avoiding it under conditions of capitalism. All employees must sell their various personal capacities to one or other employer if they wish to work at all. As a general rule of thumb, the higher the position one occupies in a given company, the greater the pressures of self-alienation as one is more and more obliged to think, feel and act like a capitalist.

Given all the above then, the apparent good news about falling unemployment seems in reality, anything but.
