It Is Good To Be Home
A M R F

It was 2 days before we went home, that the bomb
detonated. Mum and I were a street away, shopping
for gifts to take home to family. We heard it, we
saw it, we smelt it, we tasted it, and we felt it.
Heard the explosion, saw the smoke, smelt the
smoke, tasted the smoke, felt the explosion. We
ducked when we realised what was happening, Mum
pulled me into her side and ran her hands through
my hair. We stayed on the ground for a while,
until a police officer took us to a hall, where
other foreigners and people affected by it were.

The electricity was unavailable, so we had no way
to contact home, even when they were probably
worried sick. We got word that our flights had
been delayed, so we would have to wait an extra
week. There was nothing to do in those 9 days.
We didnt socialise, so basically Mum and I just
stared off into blank space, ate two meals a
day, drank half a bottle of water a day, and
slept in our two thin blankets, on the cold
winter night.

We woke usually to a babys cry, or a childs
whine. Then the day went by slowly, and the next
one started. We heard rumours that the bomb was
a terrorist attack, and twenty-three people
died, including eight foreigners. Thankfully
that didnt include Mum and I. About three days
before our flight home, we were allowed phone
calls. One call a day per person. Mother called
home first, and then I did. God, it was amazing
to hear their voices. They were extremely
worried, but I told them I was fine. I told
them we would be home in three days, and they
were very happy. For once my oldest brother
cared, he was being nice for a change.
We boarded the flight at around seven in the
morning. As much as we were excited to go home,
we couldnt express it, as we were exhausted.
We slept all the way home. When we got out, we
were greeted by our immediate family. As tired
as we were, we rushed forward. I was gathered
into my siblings arms, joyful tears streaming
down my face and a Cheshire cat grin on my face.
And then Dad lifted me up, spun me around with
all his strength in the reunion.

We drove home in silence, but the relief hung
in the air. It was dark when we got home, and
we were surprised by many relatives welcoming
us home. Soon after they left, I was made a hot
chocolate, and we all sat around the fire in
our pyjamas watching TV.

I may have been happy when we left, to get some
air as I thought home was a pain in the neck.
But gosh, I couldnt have been happier to be
home.

And must I tell you, as it is a bit obvious,

It is good to be home.
