ABOUT
THE AUTHOR
I'm a freelance photographer/writer, and part-time insurance adjuster, residing in beautiful northwest Arkansas. What else can I say? OK. I've got a lot of work published on writtenbyme.com. [January 2001]
He was a disenchanted genius
Living in the alley way.
She was someone else's mistress
With a little time to play.
She made him think that she
Could lift him up and take him far.
She opened up the door
And watched him stagger to the car.
As he climbed in to the back seat
You could see the driver smile.
'Cause he hadn't seen her play this
Kind of game in quite a while.
And I just stood there watching
As they drove into the night,
And took a few more steps
Toward the girl beneath the light.
I said "Honey, let me tell you
'bout a man I used to know
Who got into that car there
Back a year or two ago."
She said she'd like to listen
But she had better things to do.
'Til she took the twenty dollars
I had hidden in my shoe.
Right there I opened up my heart to her.
I swear I made her cry.
But in time I'd used up all the friendship
Twenty bucks could buy.
When the dawn broke through the morning fog
She clocked out for the night
And left me with my memories
In the cold beneath the light.
The sound of tires screeching
Woke me from a pleasant dream.
I opened up my eyes
And saw that long black limousine.
My back slid up the lamp post
As I tried to reach my feet.
The door opened and another broken man
Fell to the street.
So I made my way down to him
And I held him in my arms.
And I offered him some whiskey
And a smoke to keep him warm.
I could hear her wicked laughter
As the car drove out of sight.
And left another like me
In the cold beneath the light.
Ain't it cold beneath the light?
