A Thanksgiving Monday
Danny I. Spitler

Is it really the weather?

With so few cloudy, gray days in Phoenix, is this what causes a mood change?

It began to hit me just as Heather was coming to the end of the massage. She has begun to end my Monday night massages with a few minutes of energy work called Reike (pronounced Ray Key). I had drifted off for a few minutes a couple of times during the massage as she worked the knots out of my golf inflicted lower back, and kneaded some ligaments in my shoulder that were tender from something I had done.probably being a little too macho at the gym with one of the weight machines.

After an hour of rubbing, kneading, and stretching, she began her Reike. Placing her hands on various points of my body for about 30 seconds at each spot, allowing healing energy to flow through her hands. Each place she touched became a hot spot from her touch. I wished that the soft music I had placed on the stereo had been turned off. It was distracting me from concentrating on the heat of her hands. I wanted to feel what was happening.

Her final touch was my forehead, and she instructed me to take several deep breaths. Then it was over. She left the room so I could get back into my robe. I was a little dizzy as I sat up on the table, and I was suddenly feeling cold. The temperature had dropped a few degrees, and I had not turned on my heater yet. I reached for my heavy robe draped over the back of the sofa, pulled it tight around my naked body, and slipped my feet into warm moccasins.

As Heather folded her sheets and took down her table, I popped a coffee cup full of water into the microwave and set it on high for two minutes. As Heather finished packing up we talked about the Reike, and I tipped her an extra $10 as she slipped out my front door. I stirred the apple cider mix into the steaming hot water. The kitchen lights were so bright. I felt a desire to darken the house. I seldom light the fireplace when I am home alone, but it seemed right tonight. Within a couple of minutes I had the oak scraps positioned over a fire starter, and, as soon as the scraps were starting to flame, I added two medium size logs.

I seemed to be following a script..without thinking about it. Natalie Coles Mona Lisa came softly through the stereo speakers, and I took the newspaper and the cider to the couch with a pair of reading glasses. I turned on the reading light and started a story on the sports page. The desire to read left me, and I shut out the reading light leaving only the flicking fire lighting the room. It was Monday night. It was a night to get some things done. Catch up on some reading, straighten up the office, maybe visit a friend on the Internet. Hey the Packers are even playing on Monday Night Football. Why was I sitting comfortably in the dark, sipping cider and staring into a fireplace?

Various thoughts drifted through my mind, but soon the flames mesmerized and allowed the mind to go blank for a while. The Natalie Cole Stardust CD came to an end to be replaced by Anne Murrays Old Cape Cod. Thoughts again begin to drift and scenes from the previous weekend appeared in my mind. Thanksgiving Weekend. It was a long, active weekend. A trip to the gym, a large family gathering, a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings, pie and ice crme with friends, two rounds of golf, a hike up the mountain behind my house, a Cajun dinner, a gathering of friends, a Christmas tree delivery, and a few hours at the office. It was a full, rich weekend. So what was missing?

It had been Thanksgiving. Had I been thankful? I had led the prayer of Thanksgiving before the turkey attack on Thursday. Had I just mouthed the words? Yeah.probably.

Tonightstaring into the flames, I thought of a close friend facing some surgery and I was thankful for my health. I thought about the man sitting in the reception area filling out a job application this morning, and I was thankful for my financial security. I thought about a friend without a family, and I was thankful for my parents, brother, sisters, and scads of nieces and nephews. I thought about children and was thankful for my sons healthy body, his infectious smile, and his caring spirit. I was thankful for my daughters academic achievements, her drive to succeed, and her adventurous spirit. I was thankful that I am loved.

It was a time of Thanksgiving.even if it was four days late.
