E Rocco Caldwell

The telephone rings oncetwicethree times. She answers the telephone after sitting his picture down on the bed stand. There's silence for a moment then a dial tone. She hangs up thinking nothing of the call.

First ring
Second ring

She's fighting in her sleep dreaming of him. The third ring awakes her nervously as she thinks bed news. Early morning telephone calls are always prelude to someone dying. She feels the apprehension rising inside her; the fear of bad tidings. She manages to control her breathing and answers the telephone. Silence.then a dial tone. Her head is stuffed with sleep. She wants to curse but hangs the telephone up and sit on the side of her bed. The moonlight filters in from the bedroom window bathing her naked body in silver. She stares over at his side of the bed but he's in Portland on business. She wonders if he will return! She lays back and sleep returns.

Driving to the mall while on the freeway her cell phone rings, she answers itit's one of her business lines. Perhaps a sale or a potential sale she thinks. Silencethen a dial tone. Strange she thinks but cell phones have difficulty maintaining a connection.

Inside the mall at her business cart, the telephone on the cart rings. It's too early in the day but business is business. She quickly answers picking up pencil and pad.
Silencethen a dial tone. A thought flashes across her mind but she dispels it. It isn't uncommon to have a telephone ring with no one on the other end! It must occur all the time. She dealt with uncontrolled fear before and it put her in the hospital. Her eyes notice the stack of business cards on the counter of her cart: her cart, cell and home residence telephone numbers are printed on the cards. She gives the thought a moment then casts it aside. She has other pressing issues with Michael her lover for three years. Things aren't right between them and it scares her.

During dinner with Michael the telephone rings. She hesitates before answering it and he notices. Silencethen a dial tone. Anguish spreads over her oval face. He sees the fear and inquires and is persistent until she gives in. He tells her she should have never printed her home residence on the card. How many cards were out there now? Anyone could have picked up one! Fear staggers up her spine. They have an argumentthe first of many arguments. He hates her she considers watching his mannerisms as he prepares to leave again in anger. How dare he abandon her at a time some sick individual is stalking her? He only wants what's between her legs! How dare he bring up her phobia again! Someone is calling her and saying nothing! It's not in her head! It is real!

She hates guns but someone is stalking her. He knows her telephone number and where she lives. The gun owner understands. His gray eyes absorb the dim light of his shop. He smells of sweat. He suggests a small hand gun, one she can carry in her purse. It is a great equalizer. For a moment she wonders if he might have her business card! She buys the gun and hurries a way back into the warm Seattle rain letting it wash the foul stink of fear off her.

She awakes out of a shadow sleep because of sounds. She retrieves the gun as she stares through the darkness. Suddenly her cell phone rings beside her on the bed stand. She can see a figure moving in the darkness. She fires as she holds her breath.
Bang! Bang! Bang! The scent of gun powder follows and the sound of a body hitting the floor, for a few moments she lets satisfaction circulate through her body. There are sounds of sirens approaching. Her hand finds the lamp switch and the room floods with light. There is her boyfriend Michael with a box of candy and 12 roses beside his dead body. They are his normal gifts for making up after a fight. The sight of his dead body affects her very little because her cell phone is still ringing as is the phone in the living room and her telephone on the cart if it was plugged in!
