Dad's younger years were spent in Maries County near Vienna, Mo. He, his parents and siblings lived in a not-so-well-to-do house.
His father farmed, and his mother took care of everything she could. They worked as a team, doing what had to be done to survive.
They lived very poorly, wearing clothes that had patches and hand-me-downs from relatives or friends who had already had their turn with them.
They approached the winter of 1923 with much dread. Dad never said whether it was a bad year for crops, or just a bad year in general.
But in the end, Dad remembered it as one of his best years ever.
It was Christmas Eve.
Grandpa had taken the wagon and team of horses into Vienna. It started to snow, heavily at times. Night fell and Grandpa hadn't made it home yet. Supper was over and the dishes were washed and put away.
By this time,Grandma was worried. She was afraid that with the weather being so bad, Grandpa may have had an acident with the wagon. She was also worried because it was Christmas Eve, and there were no gifts for the children. The children were just typical children: they worried that Santa Claus wouldn't be able to find them. Grandma put the children to bed and stayed up waiting for Grandpa.
Before Midnight she thought she heard a noise outside. It sounded like someone singing.
The more she listened, the more she realized it was indeed singing. Grandpa was standing up in his wagon with both reins in his hands singing Christmas songs as loud as he could!
The singing awoke the children. They were thrilled. They thought at first it was Santa. They all jumped out of bed to see what was happening.
Grandpa had run into Santa Claus on his way home from town. He decided to save him a trip and deliver the gifts to his children himself. Of course,Santa was very happy, what with the weather being what it was.
Grandpa passed out little trinkets to each of the children, and of course to Grandma too.
Dad was his father's only son at the time. At age 5, Dad was very disappointed when everyone got a gift except him! He started crying.
Grandpa took the lamp and my dad and went to the barn. It was a moment Dad never forgot.
Behind his Father's wagon, attached to a rope, was a smalller version of his Dad's wagon!
He and his sister's played with that wagon for years for years to come!
Dad said it was the best Christmas he had ever had. And when he got older and realized just how poor the family really was, it made it even more special.
A few years later his Father passed away. After the children were all grown, with families of their own,Grandma told dad that Grandpa had been drinking that night. When she seen how happy he had made the children, she never said a word to him! Rest in Peace, Grandpa!
