E Rocco Caldwell

Just keep your mouth shut and let your lawyer (right out of law school just passed the bar lawyer) speak for you to the police and the DA. Ryan didn’t feel comfortable standing behind the inexperience of his lawyer but according to the DA the police was building a case against Ryan. That baffled Ryan to no end that the police could be building a case against him. He didn’t do it and he told his lawyer that every chance he got. His lawyer smirked and winked his eye. “That’s perfect,” he said. The lawyer told Ryan that the DA hadn’t formally charged him with the murder but he was the prime suspect. Ryan told the police about the program engineer and what Brenda told him concerning the sick individual. He was stalking her nearly every night. What reason would the program engineer have for killing her one of the detective asked and Ryan almost laughed. It was fine for the detective to believe Ryan killed Brenda but not the engineer!
A few days passed and Ryan was called back to the precinct along with his lawyer. The detectives seemed to be in high spirits as they led Ryan and his lawyer back into the small room. On the table was a blood stained baseball bat.
“Sit down, Mister Goldberg,” one of the detectives said to Ryan. Ryan tried recalling one of the Hebrew prayers he was taught in grade school. He could barely recall his own name. He recognized the bat before anything was said. It used to hang with a collection on a rack in his house. “Do you recognize that?” the detective pointed at the bat.
“Suppose you tell us what that is?” Ryan’s lawyer interjected.
“It’s a murder weapon; some one used it to beat to death a David Daniels and then stuffed him in the trunk of his car,” another detective said. He stared directly at Ryan. Ryan knew that David Daniels was the program engineer. “Mister Goldberg, do you recognize the bat?”
“Like I said before, detective, suppose you tell us what the bat is and what evidence you have to connect my client to the bat?” The detective seemed to grow small against the words. Ryan was trying to remember when the bat vanished. It was right after the police came to his house and took him in for questioning. The night they were suppose to be looking in his house for evidence, the night they found Brenda’s hand!
“Mister Goldberg, you know you could ease our suspicions if you agreed to a lie detector test,” the detective said.
“In your dreams,” Ryan lawyer barked! Ryan was detached from the conversation flying around him as he stared at the bat. Did someone from the police take it? Did someone enter his house while he was at the precinct? It was a crime scene now, he wasn’t allowed back into his house. With Daniels dead the police would focus all its attention on Ryan. Then he remembered something Brenda told him and it froze him in fear. He lifted his eyes to the two detectives. Brenda’s ex husband was a Seattle police officer and he was should the bat vanished after the night he was taken in. How difficult would it have been for a police officer to retrieve it and find David Daniels after Ryan mentioned him to the detectives? Things were just plain dirty again!
