Does Curiosity Kill?

Eight months ago, I was rafting down the Ocoee River on Adventure Camp with the YMCA. During the tour, I saw a whitewater kayaker soaring on rapids! This kayaker was in a bright green kayak and was out of my sight before I knew it. This lasting image in my mind has created many desires for me.
By e-mailing people and staying in touch, I discovered the Ohio Whitewater Valley Club which happened to be near my location. I have just started taking classes from them and I have learned ample amounts of information. Now, when I dream of the Ocoee River, I shake my head. The Ocoee River consists of rapids all the way up to Class V! Beginner kayaks, after practicing on flat water, then proceed to Class II waves. Class VI waves are considered deadly and dangerous. Imagine how challenging Class V waves are! I have minimized my dream to fit reality. Nonetheless, whitewater kayaking can be fun and exciting despite the speed and power of the rapids.
�Dangerous� is often associated with kayaking. �Oh my god, you�re going to die!��If you play it stupid. There are many rules when it comes to whitewater kayaking (i.e. proper gear, technique, knowledge, etc). I could go into the specifics, but basically one can kayak safely without killing themselves. Taking a class is very important if one wishes to learn to whitewater kayak. Did you know that you should never stand up in water above your knees? Your feet could become entangled in the rocks and you would be stuck. Important knowledge such as that prevents injuries. An important key to any sport would be thinking proactively.
With any sport, time and practice are equally important. Repetition and practice improve the technique. Time improves the skill. I�m a beginner whitewater kayaker right now and I flatly suck. You should see my forward stroke right now. It will take time for me to learn the technique, build my torso, and attain the skill.
�Curiosity killed the cat.� Yes, I agree in some cases. Other times, curiosity can improve the cat and prepare it for the future. Curiosity has led me to absorb all I can about whitewater kayaking. It�s scary as hell talking to people twice as old as me and learning to do a roll. Curiosity usually identifies interest. That�s when I knew I was really interested in whitewater kayaking, because I became comfortable with my instructors and successfully completed my first roll today!
