Empty Barnyard In October
Skyler Drevan

Mosquito’s,
Lots of them are here
Everywhere
Flying free, without abandon

It’s cold
Not a briskly cold
Not the kind that freeze your nose
But the kind that create goose-bumps
It’s a chill, that’s what it is
A chill
A slight wind that bristles through my hair

The cracks in the wall seem to open
Wider,
By the season
It wasn’t quite so wide before
I can see the moon shining through
Bringing a beautiful light to this
Dreary place
It’s beautiful, magnificent

The light shines on the horseshoes left
Seems like it has been there for ages;
Decades
The tale was that the brought luck to this place
Guess that was a fallacy

(Perhaps)

This barn should have been demolished
Years, decades ago
Animals, insects and rodents nest here
It’s gross
But they’ve got to do it somewhere
Why not here?
Let them nest here
Lay eggs and raise their young

Outside the wind has grown stronger
I fear for this barn
Its collapse would devastate all
Not just the rodents and insects and animals
But this is a standing monument
To the past
The men who sweet and bled for this place
It cannot die
I shall not let it

Though it is rusted,
Horribly,
This place still holds great beauty

The rusted fragile window
Has a little shine in between the cracks
The thinning beams are giving away
Still the place holds great beauty
From the spider webbed ceiling,
To thee dangerously rusted and protruding nails

All in all,
This is a beautiful barn
