Forgive Us Of Our Debts...Part 3
E Rocco Caldwell

The Shawnees spoke of the northern crest of Kansas as life giver. It contained rich soil and plenty of water. That was before the good Reverend JT Peery Christianized the lot of them and for their conversions out of paganism the railroad moved them from the beauty of the north to a piece of land in the south called Council Grove. The Aurora Borealis over the Northern Kansas sky was green filtering to yellow and ending orange at the horizon. The crest of land at night was black and indistinguishable. Coltrane followed a portion of the Oregon Trail knowing it would eventually lead him to Topeka. The night air chilled his bones but the lingering memory of Skinny-Jen's body gave him resurgence so he pulled the collars of the duster to his face and settled deeper into his saddle. He normally wouldn't attempt riding at night because of the dangers that his horse could step in a hole and break its leg but the trail was smooth and well traveled. He hated to sleep anyways with the nightmares of his wife. He discovered her body two days later filled with maggots as he lay disfigured in their bed. He never told Lincoln Washington that though he owed him a debt his true motivation was and has always been revenge on the railroad. Bennett was sent by the railroad to kill him that horrible afternoon because Coltrane had fought the railroad since his family was destroyed by the railroad in 1855. He had sought out a campaign to stop the railroad and bring certain individuals to justice namely Charles Caldwell. Coltrane tried legal channels because he father was a Quaker and believed in nonviolence. He should have known that in Kansas the law was on the side of the railroad. He tried rallying the farmers and good people of the area but that only resulted in his wife being murdered. Violence worked the best, Coltrane had tallied seventeen killings and all were associated with the Union Pacific. It was divine intervention that his debt to Lincoln could be paid by fulfilling his thirst for revenge.
The company of soldiers took up camp near the trail. Coltrane was impressed that the officer of the company realized Coltrane hadn't reached Topeka and would take the most direct route from Sweetwater. The troops drew a line from the wetlands to the open plains; maybe a good 300 yards. Coltrane knew the wetlands were out completely with its quicksand. The open plains made him a sitting duck so he had to go straight through the center of the company. He tipped his grandee as if he tossed down his gauntlet. It was going to be a hell of a night. Coltrane held the element of surprise simply due to the idiocy of one man attacking a company of troops. No one would be expecting it. He also had dynamite in his saddle bags and all he needed was to break through the thin line and create enough confusion it would take the soldier several minutes to figure out what was occurring. The army moved slowly anyway so before they started after him at least an hour would have passed. A man riding was faster than a company. He would reach Topeka and kill Caldwell before the troop was an hour away.

He removed the five sticks of dynamite and jammed the fuses in the ends remembering his army training. There would be several sentries but a walking horse was harder to hear than a riding one. Coltrane led his horse by the reins close enough for him to use the moon light. He held the Spencer up and looked into the scope placing the cross on the head of the sentry standing in the night cold. He took a deep breath and pushed down reservations over killing the innocent soldier. Coltrane told himself that the money in the soldier's pocket was money from the railroad just recycled out of Washington DC. Sure it came signed by President Grant but it was the railroad's money nevertheless. He squeezed the trigger and the bang shattered the silence of the night and the soldier's head exploded like a melon dropped against the floor. Coltrane swung his body effortlessly onto the back of his horse. He lit a match and kicked his spurs into the belly of the horse. It reared on its hind legs and galloped forward. Shouts of alarm came from all over but no shots and that was bad because the soldiers he faced were veterans. They didn't panic easy. He tossed a lit stick of dynamite towards what appeared to be a grove of tents. The light painted the night and the explosion shook the ground. Now panic settled in among the soldiers and Coltrane tossed another stick right after another. The fury and sound was deafening. He was through the line and on his way to Topeka.
Captain Williams never saw action in the Civil War. He was a West Point graduate with all the right political connections that was why he was one of the youngest Captains in the US Calvary. He returned his pistol to the holster at his hip. His men were still in a panic and the scent of gun powder reeked staining the night air. At his boots lay the Colonel's only son or what was left of him. The dynamite had blown him almost in half. Williams vomited at the sight.
"I know that was Coltrane," his first sergeant said stepping up to the Williams. He didn't mention the vomit because he too had done the same thing the first time he saw death.
"That's right you would know his ways being that you fought with him," Williams said wiping the chuck off vomit from his mouth. "The man has killed seventeen people did we know of, Sergeant."
"If we don't stop him he's kill a lot much, sir."
"Give the order to break camp." Williams stared up at the Kansas night. "Only the sheriff of Topeka can stop him now!"
As the company prepared to leave a sentry fired a shot indicating someone approached. Williams and his first sergeant reached the sentry to discover the remaining posse. Pete Jones tried to explain they were after a man that ambushed them but Williams detained them anyways.

Lincoln Washington couldn't sleep so he held his light brown wife in his powerful arms. He carried a burden. The man he saw in the saloon was a devil. What was worst, he was a devil doing the work of a vengeful angel. Lincoln knew he had to be stopped. He knew that he couldn't live with the fact that Bob Coltrane killed people to settle a debt he owed Lincoln. He rose and retrieves the saber and holster that he wore when he served with the Massachusetts 54th. In an hour he was riding directly to Topeka in hopes he reach Coltrane before he killed again. It wasn't long before he was on Coltrane's trail. He followed Coltrane to the rocks refused to approach him knowing that he could pick him off with the Spencer so he waited and saw what Coltrane did dropping three riders. He knew Coltrane had left maybe two hours later. He picked up Coltrane's trail maybe an hour later and that led him to a cow town. He knew he was perhaps a half hour behind Coltrane. It was verified when Coltrane struck the company of soldiers. Lincoln decided the wetlands would keep him concealed and he knew them well enough to get through at night.

READER'S REVIEWS (2)
DISCLAIMER: STORYMANIA DOES NOT PROVIDE AND IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR REVIEWS. ALL REVIEWS ARE PROVIDED BY NON-ASSOCIATED VISITORS, REGARDLESS OF THE WAY THEY CALL THEMSELVES.

"This is very good. I'll be glad when it's published. Purchase a Writer's Market for 2004. Do a query letter and synopsis for your novel, if you haven't already. The first thing editors notice when you send sample chapters are punctuation, grammar and spelling errors. You must minimize these errors in order for your novel to be given a chance. In June, I sent the first three chapters of my novel, and Genesis Press wrote me back stating that my work received a favorably review from the acquisitions reader and they requested my entire manuscript. My novel is currently in the second reading now, which is a very good sign that they'll most likely publish it. The first two or three chapters of any novel must always introduce the main characters to the reader. If the characters aren't interesting, the publishing company many times won't accept the manuscript. Another reason why a publisher won't accept a person's manuscript is because the editor(s) may not care for the type of genre that was written. Racism is prevalent in the book publishing industry, like any other industry. Keep that in mind. But I believe your book will do well. Westerns and war-type novels are in high demand. Rocco, I have at least 25 rejection letters from publishers. Some said my work was good, but they're currently not taking on new projects at the moment. Rocco, what you should do is send out your query letter and synopsis to many publishers within the first five months of next year. I believe this will give your novel more chances. Please understand that your query letter and synopsis must be written in a way to make a great impression, to inspire the editor to want to read what you've written. If it's littered with punctuation, grammar and spelling errors, they're not gonna give your novel a chance. " -- Alberta , Atlanta .
"I appreciate such kind words, Alberta. I'm glad to hear about the progress of your novel. You are a very fine writer with a keen mind. Something that's lacking in our field. I agree with everything you said. I have been writing this at a frenzy because the thoughts are there and I don't wish to lose them. This section I've presented so far is only the first two chapters of the books. I have one more section I wish you read. I will post today. This is my first attempt with a western but I found it refreshing and a special venture to voice many of the themes I carry inside me. Let me posted on the progress of your novel!
