Fretful Night
Ashley Burdett

Listen to the clock
Strike the hour
Of the time when people
Go to bid their
Time with utmost leisure.
Revelers dance past my window
And raise up their gleeful chants.
I am unmoved.

For I am alone
In a room large enough
For all of those who pass me.
Not one stops
To raise a ceremonious drink
To me.
So I raise a drink.
To myself
And the horrid walls
Plastered of memories
Of a life once lived.

Scraps of yesterday
That torment and mock me still
Even though they come from
So long ago.
A photograph of a lost lover
Who chose to hunt the Earth
For an adventure
Greater then myself.
(Why should I not be the
Greatest quest of a mortal
Mans life?)
Tarnished bits of ragged paper
That bear aging lines
Of a note once
Speaking of my
Earthly accomplishments.
(How could the world grow so
Unfamiliar with any of my triumphs
That these are now my secrets?)
A decrepit painting imagined
By a former friend
Who has faded somewhere
Into the history of my days
Without so much as any word.
(How does the time manage
To sneak away so quickly
To where a close friend
Soon becomes just a stranger?)

So a drink Ive raised to me
And all of my so distate memories
That chase me through my days
And haunt my ever waking hours.
Those things I spent searching
My entire life through
I found in great abundance once.
Love. Fame. Companionship.
All were once my greatest
Possessions.
But as quickly as they arrived,
They left me with nothing more
Then scraps of thoughts
And shreds of paper
That fade away, away to
Nothingness.
