Hell
E Rocco Caldwell

I notice the smooth white walls
Polished floor, crowded halls
Hanging oil lamps casting long shadows on iron doors
Listen, there's no weeping

No one stares at one another
Nor do they (I guess) hear
I say aloud,
There's standing room only here

Waiting for one's own judgment
Certain thoughts will form
I look around there's no fire
Sulfur or dirty earth worms

One of the many doors opens
Just for my own eyes
There meows that black cat
I drowned in that gray sack

Behind the same door stands
A reeking drunk homeless man
We fanatically dumped gasoline on
He burned into the night

An old woman pointing her crooked finger
Her face all bashed up
She ignited my danger that day
So I had to do her in

A gentleman in red and black tie
Wearing a shiny silk suit
Ambles quickly pass the aged bitch
As she starts to cry

He gently takes both my hands
That exact moment I understand
Payment is due of all my sins
"Please don't kick or scream"

We move closer to the door
At the end of the corridor
The chill of past despondency grows warmer
For I am strangely at home
