Life's Essence
P J Francis

She stood clutching the window frame with taught white hands. The agony was wreathed on her pale countenance, as if a sculptor had lovingly etched the lines of contrasts into her marbled skin. One lazy hand flopped like a dying fish to her stomach. She gasped as another contraction hit her with the intensity of pain that could only be mirrored by the depths of imaginable torture that only Hell can offer. A crimson arc slowly spattered her pale blue cotton trousers, fine red droplets that flowed into a never ending swirl and gush of life and death, slowly dribbled down her legs. She raised her hand to her face, and cried as she saw the unborn seep through her shaking fingers.
