My First Break
Mike Raudenbush

Hurry up Mikey. Evan was ready to get going.
My name is Nelson Michael Raudenbush, and I live in Lafayette, Colorado. My mother wanted me to go by Mikey, so that is what I have been called my entire life. I grew up in a neighborhood where my family had over five acres. We moved when I was about ten, into a large neighborhood, where you couldnt take five steps without trespassing.
Ok, let me just grab my helmet. I was anxious to ride my bike, but I knew I had to be safe.
Earlier that day I had made plans with one of my buddies from school, who happened to live in the same neighborhood as I did.
I am ready to go man, dont forget the fireworks. I was always getting in trouble with fireworks, but I love them so much.
There was a nearby lake where I loved to go mess around with fireworks that my dad would buy me. Evan was even more obsessed with them than I was. He had a huge collection that he told me his older brother would go get for him. His dad was always telling him that fireworks were unacceptable so Evan had to hide them in a secret place in his basement.
Already got them, lets go From the sound of his voice Evan was pumped to get going.
We hopped on our bikes and went roaring down the street. Evan and I always raced to wherever we were going, and he happened to beat me to the lake that day. We jumped off of our bikes, and ran down to the lake. With no hesitation I grabbed a firework, lit it, and waited until the fuse was at the very end before I threw it. About fifteen feet in the air, there was a huge bang. Our day had officially started.
Wow that was a big one. I had grabbed one of Evans.
I know, my brother got me some good ones man. Evan was reaching for the lighter.
I gave it to him and he began lighting a bunch off. The day turned to dusk, and we were both getting a bit worn out.
Are you ready to get going, Evan I was having a blast but wanted to leave.
Yup, lets head back. It seemed like Evan was in the same boat I was in.
We both walked to our bikes, and went riding off. We rode for no more than a couple hundred yards, when Evan stopped.
Check it out.. Evan was pointing to his right.
Check what out? I had no idea what he was talking about.
Over there, we could go off road biking in that housing development. He was referring to a big dirt field, where they were building a new house.
We rode over to check it out, and there was a huge hole where they were going to build a new house. We rode around for a while, jumping over small clumps of dirt, and racing around the hole.
Mikey, come over here real fast. Evan was standing really close to the edge of the hole.
I was on the other side of where he was, and I took my time going to him. As I rode up to him, Evan had a huge smile, grinning from ear to ear.
What is going on? What ware you doing over here? I was intrigued.
I was just looking at this hole; I think that we could jump into it. I could tell Evan was jazzed by the sound of his voice.
I knew what he wanted to do was extremely dangerous. Deep down I wanted to tell him that there was no way I was going to do this, but I was too scared to tell him. I didnt want to be a pussy, so I made a terrible mistake.
Yeah man, lets do it. There was no way I was going to survive.
Not only was I about to do this, but he somehow was able to convince me to go first. He let me use his bike, because he had front and back shocks. We thought that if the bike had shocks, we would be ok.
Make sure you get plenty of speed, and jump right when you get to the edge. Evan was talking as if he had done this before or something.
I was sitting on the bike about ten yards away, when I took off. I rode as fast as I possible could go, pedaling with all my might. I felt as if I was riding for an hour, before I finally reached the edge. Evan was standing two feet to the right, and cheering me on the entire way. Take off. Just as I went over the edge, I pulled the handle bars up as far as I could. I felt like I was flying, eight feet in the air seemed like two hundred. Time slowed down, and I felt invincible.
MIKEY, watch out! Evan was yelling at me.
As I shook my head, and came to my senses, it was too late. The bike had gone directly into the ground, front wheel first. As it hit the ground I went flying over the handle bars. From there it was a blur. I somehow got my arm stuck in the handle bars, and it was all pain from there. I laid on the dirt ground staring into the sky. I remember seeing the first couple of stars that were coming out. That was when I passed out.
Mikey, its going to be ok buddy, I got you some ice cream. I woke up to Evan in my face.
I felt as if I had been crying for an entire day, and my arm was killing me. I sat up a little bit, and looked at my left arm. My middle finger was touching my forearm. This was the first time I actually realized; I have broken my first bone.
