She stood, teetering on the ledge of the tall building.

She had risen that morning, sore, bruised and barely able to walk. Just like she had every morning since.

She remembered the first time that he had entered her darkened room. His soft tones persuading her to realise her secret dreams of taking a forbidden lover.

I can do nothing that you do not bid me to do, he whispered, it is down to you to invite me. You have free will and free choice.

She invited him, teased and played with him. She guided his hands, his head, his mouth and she directed him whilst he played the final act of his play. She, his participating audience, gave him a standing ovation.

Afterwards, he lay next to her smoking. The sulphurous odour of the struck match hovered and lingered around them.

I misled you. his voice sounded chilled and cynical. You need but invite me just once.

She had risen that morning, used, abused and emotionally crippled. Just like she had every morning since.

She stood teetering on the ledge of the tall building, afraid to jump.

Would she be leaving him behind? Or joining him?
