She's Just Relaxing
Danny I. Spitler

She never ceases to surprise me that she can look so totally relaxed, and at the same time exude such sensuality. If I didn't know better, I would believe that the pose is carefully calculated to tease me into an erotic frenzy, yet I do know better. She is simply sitting in the corner of the L-shaped sofa reading the paper.

She has swept her blond hair up and off of her neck into some kind of a little bun thing. The wad of upswept strands is home to a yellow number 2 Tioga pencil. It is there, amongst the wayward blond strands, waiting to be called into service in case she needs to make a note on the writing pad at her side. A note of something that she finds worthy, as she leafs through the various sections of the Arizona Daily Gazette. An upcoming concert, an interesting web site, a new restaurant, or, God forbid, a Victoria Secret close out sale.

Her face is not without the lines that are inherent with forty plus years of sun tanned existence. Still, there is such a youthful look to the shape of her face. There is no worn down look at the corners of her mouth or below the chin. Her green eyes sparkle and her lips are inviting as they move ever so slightly with whatever story she is reading in the entertainment section. Even the reading glasses that sit precariously on her tiny nose do nothing to take away the curious and youthful quality of her face.

She is small, but her neck is long. Most of it disappears into the collar of the man's shirt she has chosen to lounge in. It hangs loosely on her shoulders. The top three buttons are undone. She is dressed for comfort. She shirttail is long enough so that she is sitting on it, and, in the front, the tapered tail of the shirt sits on top of her right thigh. The sides of her thigh are full exposed.

Sitting in the corner of the sofa as she is, her left leg is extended out on the cushions. One continuous straight line from thigh, knee, shin, ankle, foot, and toes. Like a trained canine Pointer zeroing in on a covey of dove. Her right leg is propped up, her foot resting on the edge of the coffee table forming a perfectly inverted V. Approaching her from her right side, the view of this leg is mesmerizing. From where her foot rests on the edge of the coffee table I can see the top of colorfully painted toenails. Her narrow foot takes a flowing right angle at the ankle, and I can savor the lines of her tanned calf as I move my eyes upward. Like working my way up a steep mountain, I go slowly, eventually reaching her knee at the precipice of my visual journey. The downward plunge of my gaze goes more quickly as my eyes slip off of her knee and slide more quickly down the length of her toned thigh and all the way to her partially exposed right hip.

She is oblivious to the beauty of the pose or the erotic effect that it has on me. A comment from me about how spectacular she looks would result in a surprised and quizzical scrunching of her nose and a half-amused comment of, "Yeah, right." So I avert my eyes a half second before my slow gaze is recognized for the leer that is quickly becoming. I take my place beside her on the sofa, reach for the sports section, slip on my own reading glasses, and position myself so that my next long gaze at her legs is not nearly so obvious.

"Some very good descriptive writing here, but it is just that--descriptive. But what's the point? An essay should have a point. You've categorized it under romance, and I think that clearly fits, but maybe you should expand it further, into a short story or novel. You've written quite a lot it seems, so why not try to gather them together into a longer cohesive work?" -- Jenny Mercer, Ft. Worth, TX.
