Sunday Mornings
Joseph Albrecht

It is that long-awaited day of the week called
Sunday. I wake up to see the bag from Bagel King
with each bagel filling up it's space in the bag.
Besides it is the newspaper strewn out across the
kitchen table as if it were tanning under the
light. Breakfast goes quite well considering I
chopped enough wood to cause a fire that would
even have Al Gore slightly concerned. My Mother
sips her tea sucking away the caffine to keep her
going. My Father reads over the tests that our
government did to the people of the Marshalee
islands in the pacific. It is sickening to believe
the amount of pain those people went through
because of our government" he says. Sadly I can't
find myself disagreeing with that. I look over at my
brother Matt with his chocolate milk in hand.
He can't seem to break the seal off for his life,
so I take it from him, pop the seal off and hand
it back."Well it was lose already for you" he
says. I will never live to see a day when Matt
won't be able to find an excuse for anything.
Laughing I walk to my room to get changed when
I see my grandfaher at the door step in his
church clothes. I open the door to hear "Hello
Joe, I see that your father won't take you to
church, so you can come with me". "Alright then
Opa" I said. He prefers to be called Opa which
means Grandpa in German. Although this was unex-
pected, and I was not all that thrilled about it
I figured that it would be nice to go to church
with him instead of staying at the house. I go
change putting on a green collared shirt, nice
blue jeans and a belt that he got me. Matt gets
changed as well while I hear Opa and Dad argue
about going to church. I come out with Matt and
we walk down to the car. I do like Opa's car,
it is a Buick Lesabre custom with light grey
leather to reflect the metallic silver paint. I
look over at my Grandmother sitting in the
passenger seat with her purse in her lap. "Hello
Joseph I see your wearing that belt we got you".
"It is a nice belt and I like it". This was sort
of a lie but she would hate to witness giving me
a gift that I didn't like. "I don't think that's
real leather on that belt silly" Opa says to
my grandma, "Those bums used stiched leather".
"Well Opa it is a fine belt" I said. When we get
in church we find a pew in the front which is not
that hard to do since there is not that many
people around. We sit and listen to father
Dowlings sermen. He talks about how we can improve
our relationship with God and Jesus. When the first
song begins, both my Opa and my grandmother begin
singing. I don't mind my grandmothers singing, but
as for my Opa his voice is herd above all others,
which may be good for singing, but if this happend
all the time my relationship with him would not be
the same. When the last songs come to a close we
start heading to the car. As we begin driving
towards the traffic light we hear a voice telling
us to pull over. I look over and see this woman
in a big black suv. Opa pulls over curious to see
what she wants. She tells him in almost a yelling
manner that she needs money for food for the day.
"Well if this is true then how come your driving
this gas guzling vehicle" says Opa. "Listen" she tells
him "You don't know how hard my life is right now
if I don't get any money by the end of the day I
will have to beg more out of desperation". "You
don't look all that desperate" says Opa "I've seen
desperate people before in the war, I've had a
pistol pulled on me by the SS police of my own
country when I was thirteen" "I'm not going to
give you anything." He heads for the car and
drives away. I look back at the woman who is
cursing at our car. She stops when she sees another
car and does the same thing.
