That Saturday Night
Alberto Pupo

Saturday evening night of pleasure needless debauchery. Anthony Sanders arrives at homeafter a nightof over indulgence. Eyes blood shot breath reeking of alcohol. Laughing at the most trite of things. Drunkedness is quite comical but on this night all is not well. An open door lights completely off none of the customary noises emanating from within. Yet nothing mattered his mind to weary to dream up a possibility, tio busy to dream. Stumbling unto the meticuolously paved drive way he barely made it to the front porch.
" Honey I'm home." a fit of laughter ansd a sigh
Walking through the threshold sleep called to him a comfortable bed a chance to pass out unto a sheer state of perpetual bliss. The alcohol's hold grew with every passing moment everything seemed to spin in circles. For ten years this unassuming surburban structure has been home. Along with his girlfirend Jen life has been grand since leaving the icy confines of Salem. Clumsiliy he reached for a light switch carefully feeling the walls, after much scrambling he simply quit and plopped unto the velvet couc. Shutting his eyes dreaming a dream an ocean of deepest blue a gllittering ship, a beautifull exotic woman in his arms heading towards a falling sun. Forever he could live this dream all forever a dream. A crash. unexpected, alarming must be the damn cat again up to its foolish games. Shutting his eyes the allure of sleep to great ot be ignored. Another crash and this time he was wide awake, breathing labored eyes searching the dark yet finding nothing but an eerie peace a calm which usually forth a storm of sorts. Unable to sleep once again perhaps he could watch some television to further numb the senses. So that once again he might ssleep and sooth the pounding headache ravaging the mind.
In vain he searched for the remote onlty to find it is nowhere, in frustration he hisses perhaps he should go upstairs and see his precious Jen . Slowly very carefully climbing the steps a sense of vertigo sets in as if he has never scaled these familiar steps. Such nonsense perhaps it is simply the alcohol speaking . With a thud he has reached the summit a narrow passage way lead the way. Walls adorned with photographs memories of happiness and great times they shared Ah poor Jen she must be worried sick about me. Opening the door he enters slowly trying not to rouse her from sleep . He could see her chest rising up and down , tussiling as if in the midst of some nightmare. With the greatest caution he walked towards her to soak in her beauty. A petite figure flowing strands of golden hair, fair features indeed. She has been the love of his life. " Jen wake up" he whispered soothingly " Jen honey please wake up" she stirred and turned the other way,n that is just like her refusing to
be disturbed while in the midst of sleep. Downstairs he heard a soound a shutting door footsteps slowly clambering up. " Who can it possibly be?" While the senses are indeed impaired lust for self preservation runs stronger within. Gun he must find his gun. In a mad scramble he opens the drawer frantically searching for his magnum the only resource against home invasions immediately available. Footsteps quickened in pace what can this be who dares. A bullet in the chamber sweating palms on the handle with a sudden explosion of violence the door swings open. Now the attacker stands befor ehim poised and ready to strike. He jumps on him like a rabid beast a struggle ensues flesh against flesh a survival of the fittest. She cam awake screaming deleriously not knowing what is going on " Bam!" a shot is fired followe dby another a final breath the attacker falls limply to the floor another scream of horror and as if through miraculous action light fills the room , Now a familair face stares back at him grinning triumphantly at peace in death . Blood on his hands a murderer he is condemmed what terrible shame . What he stops to see the crimson flid on the walls . A young girl eyes open bleeding profusely near death. And still the corpse smiles knowingly they all know what he has done....
Gun in hand no way out he reflects upon the night all feeling gone. That face staring back at him the mysterious assailant . " It was he!" a mad laughter breaks throughout a final shot was heard on that Saturday Night!

"Nice job, though it reads more like a screenplay than a short story, but I mean no disrespect by that." -- EC Allen.
"Started out with good possibilities, but I'm sorry to say, too (note the spelling) many typos and lack of punctuation make this difficult to read. It takes the real enjoyment out of reading a potentially suspenseful and powerful story." -- DK.
