The Immortality Thief
David B Doc Byron

''Oh yes,'' said Professor Albertson. ''I can bring
back the spirits of the dead. In fact, I can bring
back the dead themselves.''
His associate, Dr. Milo, thought him a bit drunk,
but then again, who wasn't normally drunk at the
annual Halloween party?
He glanced from left to right, to see if they
were being overheard. ''Is that so?'' he asked.
''Yes, quite so. Not only the spirits, but the
bodies as well.''
''Thats hard to believe.''
''Why so? It's only a matter of spiritual and
molecular transference.''
''Still....'' Milo trailed off, watching the
other guests moving into the next room. He was
shaking his head in disbelief. ''You mean.....
....time travel?''
''Yes, and it's easy, if you know how.''
''Okay, I'll play along. How, then?''
''I can't tell you old boy, it's most definitely
a secret.''
''Alright, alright. Well...at least tell me WHO
it is you've brought back from the dead.''
''That much I'll do. The other day, I brought back
Doc Haliday.''
''Of OK Corral fame?''
''The one and only.''

Milo sat shaking his head again. ''Did he like
it here? I would think he'd be fascinated by our
modern world.''
''Oh yes, he was. The climate wasn't dry enough
for him though. He had tuberculosis, remember.''
''Yes, I remember that much of the tale. What
did he look like?''
''Nothing like his old photographs. Tall, gaunt,
pale. Going bald and had an ugly mustache. Poor
fellow, he coughed alot, and had quickly become
frightened of our modern world, the cars, traffic,
overpopulation, noise and confusion. I felt sorry
for him, so I sent him back after one day. Besides,
he missed that loathsome creature, Big nosed Kate.
What a slut.''
Milo cracked a sly grin. ''Did he....happen to
leave you with a SOUVENIR of his visit?''
''As a matter of fact, he did.'' Albertson
reached up and removed his deerstalker cap,
reached inside, and removed a bullet, handed it
to Milo. ''There you go, old chap.
Read the inscription on that.''
He did as instructed, and saw:
DOC HALIDAY- TO jACK

''Very interesting,'' Milo said. ''But not
very convincing yet.''
''Well, my friendly unbeliever, just the other
day, I brought back HG Wells, and I can prove it.''
''How so?''
''Well, if you recall, HG wrote a story called ''The
Time Machine.''
''Yes...I remember. Good story.''
''Yes, and more true to life than you could ever
imagine. As a matter of fact, he brought ME back
from the past. Then I stole his time machine, and
disposed of him as well.''
Milo sat stifling a giggle. '' Oh, really? And
what was your name in your past life, may I ask?''
''Of course you may. They called me ''Jack,'' for
short.''
''And what was it short for, may I ask?''

Albertson leaned in close, wrapping his arm
around the back of Milo's chair. Most of the other
guests had adjorned to the dance hall now.
''JACK the RIPPER,'' he whispered into Milo's
ear, as he plunged a knife into his back.
