The Lake
Philip Kuchar

The air is fresh, so must we go
Where the dark lake's mist blows?
"Come, my bride, too young are we
To tread here, too fancy-free;
It licks our skin, the haunting lake;
What life we have the deep will take."
"My dearest, no, its soothing touch
Makes me forget so very much."
So you swoon, splash, and disappear;
Alone I wait, yet is it fear
Delaying me or foolish pride?
I remain at the dark lake's side
Until I hear your luring call;
Into the murky pool I fall.

Through weed and stone I search not long:
I'm guided by your siren song;
Your eyes are dark, your skin is pale;
I whisper through the drawing veil:
"In this cold void the touch of death
Will surely steal your final breath;
Let us flee for the summer air,
And journey back, a better pair."
Upon my plea you promptly drown;
Atop your head a dull light crowns;
I turn in fright: you blankly stare
With frozen grin and floating hair;
I swim and swim until I reach
The summer air and sparkling beach;
Yet a song, your song! it calls me still,
"Come, succumb to the dark lake's chill."

"You are very very good. " -- Meg.
"Your short poem called to mind the lady of the lake in the Arthurian legends and your writing truly evoked a mystical happening. I wonder if Keats and Shelley did a stint on a building site?" -- Martin Milner, Freehold, NJ, USA.
