The Park
Robert Benton

The Park grips the imagination of the young and causes the dead dreams of the past to resurface in the old. Strange, this place seems to change more and more as if it is growing up along side me. The layout of the park has not changed, the swings, jungle gym, slides, tables and pond are exactly where they always have been, but they are somehow different.

The once silver gleam of the slides has given place to ruby patches of rust. The sparkling chains of the swings are now as dull gray as an overcast day. The jungle gym that had once stood proud like a cyclopean tree of a world forgotten. Its criss cross patches of bars connecting like branches has released many of them like a tree releasing dead branches in a strong wind. Many of the tables, which once were used for picnics, are now food for the indomitable hunger of various insects. As clear as a summer night the pond at one time appeared, but now it is as murky as the future.

The park has felt the various ravages of time that all humans have felt, however the park also can be rejuvenated. Hard work and a loving care can bring it back to what it once was. It is apparent that the park has gone to waste, but it can be nursed back to its once enchanting splendor.

Amazing how the park can bestow dreams of the imagination upon everyone. The child who plays on the swings imagining that he is flying off to new worlds aboard his space ship, or the little who girl plays in the sand builds a wonderful castle, which she is the queen of. The young man who comes back to the park can revitalize a dream that was once buried by the limited views of society. The park, even though it has decayed with age still holds some of its magic and continues to have sway over the imaginations of all who enter it.
