The Physical And Psycological Benefits Of Exercise
Joseph Albrecht

I find life to be much easier for me if I have
something to focus on such as a hobbie or a goal
I am trying to set. One of my favorite ways of
doing this is through running. According to Joe
Henderson (Consulting Editor of "Runner's World")
"Running burns about 100 calories per mile.
However, phsysicians claim that the circulatory
system benefits the most. Runners typically record
pulse rates 20-30 beats per minute below those of
sedentary individuals and peak oxygen consumption
figures twice as high as normal." Aside from its
great physical benfits, running has been reported
to help psychologicaly as well. Joe Henderson
states "Runners claim equally dramatic psychological
changes during and after exercise. Steady, low-
intensity running, for periods of 20-30 minutes or
more, appears to reduce tension and anxiety levels
temporarily." Evean walking can dramaticly help
heal the body. According to Spectrum Magazine
"A 16,000-person study of twins at the University
of Helsinki found that taking a brisk walk, half-
hour walks just six times a month cuts the risk of
early death by 44%. Evean those who exercised
occasionally-less than six times a month were 30%
less likely to die early than their sedentary twin."
In a medical research study "A study of 707 healthy
older men found that, over a 12 year period 41% of
the men that walked less than a mile a day died,
but only 24% of the men that walked more than two
miles a day died(the average of the latter group
was 3.7 miles). Cancer was the disease that walking
was most likely to prevent." Scientists at Brigham
and Women's Hospital discoverd that "Men that
exercised once or twice a week reduced their risk
of heart attack by 28% over sedentary men,and those
exercising 5 times a week cut their risk by 44%.
When looking at the length of the workouts those
that exercised 11-24 minutes rudced risk by 35%
over those doing shorter workouts; exercising
for longer than 24 minutes, however did not bring
any added advantage, for exercise to be effective it
apparently doesen't have to be lengthy." However,
running and other exercises increases free radicals in
cells and speeds up cell aging. To compansate for this
you could take antioxidants after running such as
vitamin C. There are also many antioxidants in foods
we eat and beverages (cinnamon, green tea, organic
jucies and fruits). Thank you for reading and I hope
that you find this informative and helpful to you.
