ABOUT THE AUTHOR
My name is Adriana, and though I have a nickname, an American friend has told me I have a beautiful name, and uses only my full name. I am a woman, a dreamer who has a passion for life, and loves writing, and I must say, that I breathe words in and out.

I started writing in 2003, as I was internally urged on to do so. Poetry is a natural outcome of my life, and I felt that I was guided or maybe even destined to write, a feeling that took over and could not be stopped.

I love writing all types of poems and am glad when emails arrive from other people on the web, telling me that I put into words exactly the way they feel. Helping people is a nice way to forget about one's own personal problems and keep on going. Another reason that I have been writing is to improve my English. As English is not my native language, writing in English is another way to be even closer to this beautiful language. It has always come so naturally to me, that I can consider it a gift from Heaven.

I was born and raised in Brazil. In marriage, I spent some time in the USA with an American citizen. Sadly though, it did not work out, and I returned to my native land, Brazil. Memories of the time I lived there are nice, and one day I hope I am able to go back to that beautiful country to visit and enjoy all the good things it has to offer.

Teaching is what I do as an occupation and have a love for it, while writing is not only my love, but a hobby and a friend as well. As life's trials come I realize just how blessed I am in God and that He is everything to me.

My children are grown and are young adults now. One is currently living in Italy and works as an Architect, and the other is a psychologist and lives here, in So Jos dos Campos.

Soon, I will be a grandmother and will continue writing poetry and enlighten people's lives with my gift.

My ultimate dream is to have one of my original poems used as lyrics in a song, and then hear it on many radio stations.

Why Do We Write? (A Reflection)
Dri Cook

It's been almost one year that I wrote my first piece, one year that I am here. I met a lot of people, made a few friends, some stayed in my life, some just faded away. People who make me cry, laugh, smile, other times, frown. There are also times they surely make me angry or disappointed.

Why are we all here? Have you ever thought that nothing really happens as a coincidence in life? We are here for a purpose without any doubt. Are we here because we are responsible writers and want to make a difference or because we only enjoy playing with words? Are we here to let our words travel all over the world and plant seeds of rightness, joy, faith, love or just because it's fun to know that the same world is reading what we publish, does not matter what we publish? Are we here because we also want to set a goal and follow it, because we want to succeed or what? If your answer is yes, that's fine. Have you ever thought that every human being is equipped to succeed? It's part of our nature to fight for survival. To win is always our goal. We want to fit in, we were born to fit in, to be part of a group, to conquer, to win. However, there are ways and ways to succeed. We should always find the one that would add something into someone's life, instead of stealing. And as writers, we are supposed to do that.

This is a great site except, ah, except for some little things that happen once in a while, as for some cat fights and all types of entertainment but no big deal, this is also part of it. Other times we would really get upset like when we open it up to and all of a sudden we realize some of our pieces have POOF... gone or migrated into another space here. Ok, we may have some disagreements now and then but who doesn't? I want you to rethink the reason you write. Most of us write to release, to share our good and not so good experiences. We all have our dark spots, inner beasts that, in a positive way, help us grow. No matter the reason you write it is ok. To write is an art, to write is a tool to reach people and elicit emotions hidden deep inside their hearts. To write is also to pour out emotions and let your feelings speak, instead of your lips. To write is to be bold, to face challenges, to overcome your limitations as I do with my English, since I am not a native English speaker as you well know. To write is to speak the truth, to be gentle, other times a little aggressive, to be fearless and jump into people's heart. To write is also, as a friend of mine said so well, to speak of lies and make them to sound like truth. To write is to elicit all types of feelings, but as writers we should always let the wind of emotions blow and wait for the rain fall in to water the words we write to make them blossom.

I am aware that not always writing is an easy task. The world of language is a wide one. We should be careful. Not always what's noisy or aggressive means to be deep. Not always what is turbulent has a good effect on people's lives. There are times the sound of silence speaks for itself. I would say that, most of the time, an eloquent speech comes from the silence. What does it mean? Well, it means that not every written or spoken word is powerful unless we use it TO COMMUNICATE emotions, otherwise it won't have any effect at all. Words are powerful, they can change people's lives,
they can be history. On the other hand, words can also be meaningless if they don't communicate. To be granted the privilege to have your work read worldwide is also a great responsibility. To write is part of our mission and if we are still on earth, it means we are not done with our mission yet.

I want to thank you all for taking your time to read this article. I want to thank God for leading me here. I also want to thank my dear friend in Canada, Paul Tikkannen, the one who told me about this site and the one who has always believed in my work. Another special thanks to Brian O'Neal a very special friend as you know. Brian has not only supported and motivated me but we also have become partners as for the lyrics. I also want to thank each one of you, JAG (my first friend here), rocco, km, kavya, Jefrey, Ryan, JAG, Moses, Steven (hey, where have you been?), DG, people who have been leaving feedback, letters and to welcome the ones who have just arrived. I don't remember all the names here but I want to thank all of you and I also want to invite you to stay. As I said, I am being bold because English is not my native language. It's not easy at all to develop a thought in a language that is not our native one, but I just follow my inspiration when it comes and type them away, since they all come in English. I must include two other people on this list as well: a poet friend of mine, DA, from another site who has always believed in my work, someone who I will never, ever forget, no matter where he might be right now. DA is on his way up to Heaven because of a serious disease. Finally, I want to thank Mr. James A. Cook, the one who started all this.

"very thoughtful, well worded article. " -- echo.
"Yay, way to go Dri! I think we all needed that, thank you for reminding us why we are here : )" -- kavya.
"Hi Dri! i do think we are all here for a purpose. As well as I am. Tell you what, we're all not from the sam country and some of us come from a non-native English speaker country but we all can understand and communicate with each other. Hey! That was cool, isn't it?" -- Akira NJ.
"yes, Akira, that's very cool. We're like a family and it's a great feeling. Thank you all for leaving feedback." -- Dri.
"Hi Dri, just to say goodbye, I am sorry if I gave you flack, it was not intended that way,I was stupid to think I could write poetry, and hope I did not bore you too much with my stupid rantings, I shall still read yours and the others work. I think you are a super writer, and there are many on this site who are good writers, again I am sorry for making a complete fool of myself, thank god I did not write under my real name, I would have been a laughing stock to my students, the teacher who had nerve to put rubbish on internet,I've learnt my lesson the hard way.all the best.D" -- Diana Venditti, Italy.
"Diana, to tell you the truth, I think you worry too much on getting and returning feedback and this is not it. Write away, get your stuff published here and let people free to make their own choices. I have been reading some of your "fights" with other people here but just let it go...we should be able to understand that we are not going to please everybody. There will be time people will aplaude us, other times, they won't, but so what? My piece of advice: don't take it so seriously. Relax and enjoy the moment. OK?" -- Dri.
"This piece is more relevant today than ever!" -- kavya.
"Hey Dri, this is Bryan. I'm a young writer/poet. When I read your piece, I sat back and said...Gosh, this lady sounds nice, I want to be on her list of friends. I ask if you will please read my poems, and tell me what you think. But please don't read the story "A writer's high", because it is roughly on the same subject and not half as good as this. Thanks. " -- Bryan King.
