Chapter 14: Truth Behind The Stars

“It’s cold, can I come closer?” Maria asked after trying to open the door. “Sure, we have to keep warm don’t we?” replied Slain as he sat on the floor, leaning back against the wall. Maria moved over and snuggled against his body, she could see a wound on his arm. “It’s bleeding, are you okay?” she asked. He just laughed and looked into her eyes “it’s nothing, I’ve had plenty of wounds before, can’t tell you how many I got during the war”. It stayed silent for a while, things just got colder, and there was nothing that they could do. “What were the wars like? Not being rude, but is the reason why you hate being a hero is because you’ve killed a lot of people” Maria asked silently. Slain looked for an answer, he thought for awhile then spoke in the cold wind “a hero is someone who saves another person, life is a gift, only the devil takes it away, that’s why I’m not a hero, I could of saved people, but I didn’t, war changes people, the constant bombing wrecks up your ears, the fear of death stood at you when you ran out of those trenches for attack. Gassing, bombing, shooting, the whole lot. The army feed you the same patriotic bullshit in each and every war. Die for you country they say, die for your country. When you get out there it’s not about dying for your country, it’s kill or be killed. Every turn could mean a bullet in head, friends could be gone within a blink of an eye, just gone, without a trace. Young one’s seem like too young to be out there, they haven’t lived their life yet, they haven’t lived” he started to cry “the old one’s looked like they couldn’t carry a gun. People from all around you just falling down and not getting back up, when you get out there, it’s like, you have to kill to live, how sick is that. We walked into a camp in the Africa war, the whole camp was full of dead natives, it wasn’t just the men, it was the women, and the children, I had enough of my best efforts being turned into bullshit by the same people who paid me to do it. Over my time, I must have seen over a million people die, millions of them just falling. Everyday was a new threat, the fight never stopped, not for five minutes, we had no time to eat, no time to sleep, not even time to read our letters from home. It’s not as if I’ve prospered, I’ve survived three wars yes, but that’s not heroic, I tell you who are the real heroes, the guys who died in that war, they were the real heroes, they gave their lives so that others could have theirs. Kids, at the age of 16, give their lives so that people like you and me could live, that’s a hero, that’s a real hero, people say that I’m the hero of our time, how can I be a hero when my only talent is to kill” Maria looked up at him, shaking hard because of the cold she spoke “you can kill well, but look, you’ve saved all of us, you may not think it, but you are a hero, to me you are, and nothing you say is going to change that, I tell you why you think your not a hero, it’s because of your wife, you think you could of saved her” Slain nodded gently “yeah I guess, witnessing your wife get raped to death can do things to your head, I loved her, she loved me, I thought that’s all we needed, I killed innocent people though, afterward, they were all innocent, a whole tribe, nothing I can do is ever going to make up for that, I killed innocent people. Maria, you said to me that you loved me, but who can ever love a monster that does that to people, who can? I’m sorry Maria but when she died I thought it was all over for my life, I had nothing else to live for, but everything left to fight for, but I couldn’t keep on killing, I had seen too much death, too much carnage and hurt, so I left the army, I had enough of being their slave for day after day, enough of them using me for what ever their sick little desire’s were. I couldn’t kill anymore, yes, I am talented, extremely talented, but after her death, I couldn’t do it, I just couldn’t see another death again, until this whole new war started out, I had to save you guys, I just had to, I couldn’t see you die” Maria snuggled up closer, her senses began to fall, she was feeling slightly sleepy. “Why can’t you love me Slain, why can’t you be with me, please tell me” Slain looked deep into his mind again, she deserved the truth from him “I do love you, but, I feel guilty because of my wife, it’s like I’m betraying her, like I’m turning my back, and I love her too, I can’t put you through that” Maria started to smile, she could see where this was going, if she was going to die, she wanted to die with someone “I wouldn’t mind y’know, and you shouldn’t feel guilty, I bet she wants you to be happy, and anyways, yeah, you did bad, you killed those people, but you’ve saved these people, take it easy… kiss me” Slain looked down at her, he saw her eyes, he moved forward and gently pressed his lips against hers. They didn’t stop, with the flurry of passion, they moved upon each other.
He moved his arm across slowly, she submitted to his might and he pinned to the floor, it was bitterly cold, but their fiery passion kept them alight. She moved her hands around his back, feeling his muscle, it turned her on. They kept on kissing, the pace quickened. “I’m feeling, dizzy” said Maria, she started to fall asleep, it was the cold. He stopped then rolled over next to her, he held her in his arms. “It’ll be okay, just stay with me yeah?” he replied. They both started to lose consciousness, their eyes were shut, they were asleep in the bitter cold.

Chapter 15: War Zone

“TAKE OFF, TAKE OFF, GO ITS OKAY, GO!!!” Matt shouted. The beach was full of people escaping from the dinosaur threat; ships and Chinooks were taking off behind them. They were the Special Forces team, born to fight, trained to kill. Armed with state of the art weaponry and full on armour they fought to keep the innocent alive. They were all scattered on the beach, protecting the runaway civilians. Matt was among the team, along with Stovell, Tony, DD, Colin and Sealy. The best in the world united to stand against the dinosaur threat. Explosions ricocheted across the beachfront and piles of Raptor corpses rained upon the perimeter.
A voice beamed down the radio “Officer Tony here, we’ve got troubles on the western front, a field of Raptors preparing and ambush, over and out” Sealy acknowledged the distress call and charged toward the western front, they needed to ensure the safety of every civilian. “We can’t hold the lines, too much enemy resistance,” replied Stovell. Sealy looked around for advice, he was being called by way too many people. “We have all the civilian’s on the extraction pods, meet up with operation Relza in section 3, move out you dogs” ordered Matt. The whole team kept their fingers on the trigger, it was an ongoing onslaught, they had saved the remaining citizens but they had no way of getting themselves out alive.
The radio beamed with messages, Tony had already gotten into the bunker in section 3 of the beach, he could decipher something from the crackling radio “pick…u.p… 14….hundred… hour….”. Their pickup was five hours away. It didn’t take long for the rest of the gang to show up, they were the best there was. Matt was the leader; he took over after the team were separated from their leader. The original leader was said to be the best in combat but during a fire attack, the team were separated in the middle of the forests of Africa. Ever since they have been fighters for freedom, the freedom fighters, and they fought in the memory of the old leader, Marc Slain.
Everyone was inside, after 3 hours on continuous assault the dinosaurs kept on coming, not stopping. Ammo was depleting and morale was dropping. “Right guys, we have 5 hours to survive, things are quiet now, let’s hold the bunker and get out alive,” explain Matt. The bunker was a concrete shell, with a narrow opening all around. The night darkness seeped through the opening; blood had been spilled on a gigantic level, innocent people had died, warriors had been tested and dinosaurs had been decimated. However, it wasn’t over. They still had to fight, still had to stay alive, just for 5 more hours.
Sealy was the younger one, a man without fear. Colin was the oldest and contained within his mind a sick sense of experience in the field. Stovell was the heavy arms specialist, a big man with a big attitude. DD was in some ways the outsider of the group; it came with his field of speciality, being a sniper. Matt was the leader, he gave orders and got the job done.
“Y’know boss, fuck the pick up, the only way we’re gonna survive this, is taking the fight to them, taking out their forces, that’s the only way” whispered Colin. Matt looked round to the rest of the group, the thought of becoming heroes or to die trying almost gave them a smile. “Why not guys? Let’s go out there, and show them who the dominant species is. Lets get a plan together, hit their forces where it hurts.”

Chapter 16: Fight for your destiny

DD checked the perimeter quickly; there was no sign of dinosaur oppression so far. It gave them some time to set up before the Raptors came back for another go. The plan was to get DD and Tony to a safety spot on top of a building around the vicinity. Stovell would provide heavy fire from a gun situated on top of the bunker. Colin, Sealy and team leader Matt set up sand bunkers within a 30-metre radius of the seemingly indestructible concrete bunker. Once DD and Tony had made it up a large building laying on the edge of the beach, they would be in the perfect position to hold their enemy for the amount of time needed.
“On your signal captain, we’ll begin our suicide run,” informed Tony over the radio, him and DD stood firmly outside the bunker, the coast was clear. A fall of silence filled the air; everyone clenched their weaponry firmly. Lets face it, it’s not everyday a team of highly trained fighters go fighting against a horde of dinosaurs. The expressions were nothing, there was no sound and there was a faint taste of blood in the air. “The signal sir…?” asked DD.
Matt looked around, something just wasn’t right. Their plan was good but this was becoming too easy. Suddenly, a grunt came from the distant, they had come. “GO GO GO GO, THEY’RE COMING!” the leader shouted. In the distance, through the crimson sun, an army of Raptors charged toward their position with fierce prejudice. Haste induced into the footsteps of Tony and DD as they ran with full speed to achieve their goal. Flares of gold flew through the air, narrowingly dodging their fellow comrades. Bodies hit the floor and blood spewed in the air as the army drew its position forward quickly. DD and Tony had reached the door of the destination building. The stairs where in front of them, sounds of whizzing bullets and explosions filled their ears with a constant ringing. A long horizontal climb faced them, they didn’t have much time.
“They just keep on coming!!” shouted out Colin as he struggled to keep hold of his machine gun as it fired continuously at the coming threat. They had about 3 minutes, he calculated, until a horde of flesh chewing dinosaurs feasted on their corpses. They were dropping like flies, where were all these coming from. It seemed endless. Ammo was running out as well, quicker than expected.
The hatch was easily opened with a few shots of a machine gun; they were on the roof quicker than expected. DD set up his snipers rifle on the perfect vantage point and began to fire. “So, they say you’re the only one with a wife in the whole platoon eh?” asked DD between shots and reloading.
